Gmail app upgraded
« on: November 10, 2016, 02:52:13 PM »
Anyone else use this app and found things you like or dislike?

Personally, I think it stinks. Much too "fussy", but most irritating is that all images autoload and I can't figure out how to stop that. Now some emails show up as way too large and I can't read them on my iPhone. Not at all useful.

Isn't that part of that company that collects every thing on you that they can? I don't even use them for searches, anymore! eek2.gif scram.gif

And the United States = The Banana system

I found the forum for posting for help. If I get an answer, I'll post it here in case someone else needs help.

The response so far:

QUOTE
Could you please try removing your account and add it back again?

If the issue still persists, let me know I'll investigate this further.

I did as they suggested and all images still autoload. I've yet to hear back from google. sad.gif

Why not just use Mail on the phone? Gmail works just fine with that and I don't have any images downloading unless I ask for 'em. I have multiple email accounts - only a couple of them Gmail. They all work well in Mail, and it's a cinch to set up Gmail accounts in Mail. Plus all those mail accounts sync nicely with Mail on my Macs. One application across all devices for 14 email accounts. Works for me. smile.gif

I used to get all my email through the Mail app. For me, getting my Mac mail and Gmail mail together was confusing. Probably just me and the way my brain works but having two email accounts going to two email clients keeps things in perspective. Besides, I get way too much Gmail because I use it for all my online connections. My Mac account is only for personal use and a few of my iPhone apps.

The updates they made in the latest Gmail app for iPhone are not my favorite but I'm already getting used to the changes.

I tried this on my iMac at one time and ran into a major problem: I was unable to send mail. My ISP requires me to use their outgoing server, and a few years ago they cancelled a partnership with gmail and now they won't allow anyone to send using a gmail address—it's flagged as spam and won't go out. I could try it on my iPhone as that's linked to my cell phone, but no idea how to get around my ISP's sticky rule.

I don't like many of the changes, but auto-loading of images is unacceptable for me, no matter what else their app does.

I suggest you re-create your Mail/iCloud/Network settings. I'm not sure anyone can block the use of any email domain name, whether they have some kind of 'agreement' or not. I suppose the Constitution doesn't speak about freedom of speech in the digital realm? Obviously, you are able to use Gmail via the web, but that's not how you should be required to operate.

In your Mail Accounts settings is a place to enter both the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers. I only use Comcast for my Comcast addy's. Two others are Hostgator and then several at iCloud/Apple.

While I agree that Gmail is a hotbed of SPAM, amazingly, even some commercial enterprises use it! But your ISP should be worried about incoming SPAM and blocking known outgoing SPAMmers who are "customers", not every single "customer". Sounds like a good plan to eliminate their own company. wallbash.gif After all, that's part of their job to protect the web.

Of course, I don't have to deal with them, so it's easy for me to rant! blush-anim-cl.gif scram.gif

Kimmer, is this peak.org you're talking about? And this? http://maillist.peak.org/pipermail/bc-nonp...ber/000034.html

Because that's the case with their email, but I'd be surprised if they prevented you entirely from using other email accounts. Grounds for looking for a new ISP, in my books, although if it's like most places, your choices range from one other to none at all. sad.gif

With Rogers, we are supposedly required to add all our other accounts into a list in Yahoo (Rogers' email provider), but I notice that it doesn't seem to care about the latest Gmail one I added.

I'd give it a try again in Mail - just to be sure that it doesn't in fact work. Then I'd complain. It's pretty awful if they're forcing you to use webmail, if you ask me.

Yes, it's peak.org. When Sneakers was alive and we had a domain, we could NOT send mail using our domain host (although we had when we'd been with SBC in California); all outgoing mail had to be sent via the peak servers, so it was an issue at times for those on the receiving end as their ISP's thought it was spam because it showed two servers.  rolleyes.gif

You are correct, my choice is peak or nothing. sad.gif

Tomorrow I'll try it again and see if I can get it to work. If not, I'll add it my ever growing list of garbage I'm trying to deal with right now.

Thanks, Paddy.
