Great Speed Test for your interweb connection
« on: January 16, 2017, 07:58:44 PM »
Simple, easy to understand graphics. Simple explanations of the five tests. Good list of trouble-shooting procedures to help determine problem areas. No Java nor Flash! Best of all, absolutely no ads!

Thanks for posting that. I have used the Time Warner Cable (aka Specturm) speed test and had, basically, the same results.

I tried this a couple of weeks ago, after Jim posted it.

It worked then.

But now, when I try it, it just shows the horizontal barber pole, but it never gets past the scrolling candy cane.

AND, there is no 'start test' button

What am I doing wrong?

I need to re-confirm my earlier test results.

Thanks,

Jack

Try Internet Health Test. I got that link from an email sent to me by the NY Attorney General's office. He's suing Time Warner for false claims about download and upload speeds. As it turns out, I'm getting what I pay for, so I'm not complaining.

[4]I need to re-confirm my earlier test results.

1. You might just need to clear your browsers cache. dntknw.gif
2. I notice the "start" button is now called "Test Now". It also displays only 2 'dials' at once, instead of the 4 I saw last time.
3. Probably nothing! Many times, the problem is with the Interweb, the app, the phase of the Moon. We have been trained, however, to think the problem is us! wallbash.gif
4. Don't ever expect two runs to ever have the same values. There are just too many variables. Best you can do is keep a collection of tests and average the scores. I think it is DSL Speed Tests dot com that you can register with and they keep a history of all your scores and will display your averages. I'll check that tomorrow... maybe.

Lastly, this series of tests is mainly to display and use HTML5 (and I suspect lots of CSS3, for animations and transforms) rather than javascript, Flush, etc. and it is "Open Source". That means it can and probably will change over time as people make changes to the code/GUI/etc. If you don't visit daily, you may not recognize it the next time you use it. wink.gif In this case, I noticed lots more graphics in a "Summary" section that I don't remember from before.

Jack, have you tried more than one browser?

I just tried it...no complaints!

I just had a similar problem. The solution was to reset the modem.

Had cable problems last week, long, frustrating story! wallbash.gif  Anyhow, I also got a newer cable modem. One of the first things I did was to check the up/down-load speeds. The strange thing is that the HTML5 display is now back to the four 'dials' like my first post (and Paddy's image shows). In effect, I did the "reset modem" trick the most thorough way possible! laughhard.gif

Back to the OP, I visited 4 other 'speed testing' sites yesterday, all within a few minutes. None gave speeds as fast as the HTML test and they all were much slower. I'm sure at least one used Flash but it may be they all do.

Again, the usual caveat, speed tests have many variables; server location, what your machine is doing during the test, your local network traffic, etc, etc.

Same old

Reset modem - behaved dfferent initially - then went directly to the sleepy barbershop bar which justvkeeps acting like it's working/
But no joy.

Same in Firefox 45.7 esr and Safari (SL version.)

I just dl'd Rocat 7 browser.

I will try that later.

The modem could be bad. Luckily for me, I merely borrow a modem from my ISP (Spectrum, aka Time Warner). When the modem goes belly-up, I just exchange it for a new one. This has happened three times, twice in the last two months.

Me too!  mad.gif I get a bit over 100 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload, but that's what Spectrum claims, and they're accurate. As of now, they don't offer anything faster.

Yeah - I can't complain about speeds these days. Used to be the only internet in the neighbourhood here was Bell DSL and the best they offered was 5Mbps. Rogers finally moved in a few years ago. Thank goodness - because I just checked, and Bell STILL only offers 5Mbps down and 800kbps up here - and for the "unlimited" monthly service they will relieve one of $67.95! ($57.95 if you opt for the 50GB cap). Is this a JOKE? Rogers offers those speeds for $24.95 a month!! When I called to cancel Bell about 3 years ago, they kept trying to get me to stay by offering discounts, but couldn't seem to understand that (1) their speeds were PATHETIC and (2)their "on demand" satellite TV was no more "on demand" than fly to the moon - the only thing "on demand" about it was that they demanded that you pay for the movies you wanted to watch when THEY decided to show them. If the movie you wanted to watch was only on at 3 AM on Tuesday, tough luck. dry.gif

Because I have internet, cell, landline and cable tv with Rogers, and have been with them for 10 years, I've got a whack of discounts and pay $79.99 a month for my 250Mbps down/20 Mbps up unlimited internet. Out of curiosity, I checked to see what Comcast offers in North Andover these days, and it appears I'd pay about the same there for 200Mbps down/10Mbps up along, with the cable and home phone package. So much for the myth that the US is cheaper and/or better. wink.gif Cell plans in the US are still better - depending on where you live and what the coverage is like, of course - same as here.
