Got my new External HD and a hub, too

I have a brand new USB 3.0  4-port hub and also I have a new Seagate Backup Plus Drive as my new external hard drive.Thank you so much for the recommendations !!!!!!

I ordered a second Seagate Backup Plus Drive, so the new one that I have now which is in classic black (while I'm waiting for the second backup, which will be in royal blue, to be delivered) will be dedicated to Time Machine.

Hooray! My new one shows up on my desktop!   thumbup.gif

Now what do I do?????  Baby steps and pictures help, as some of you know only too well...without them, I kinda flail.  flail.gif  
How important is the "Start Here Mac" icon that shows up when I double-click my new Seagate icon?

I don't think you have reformatted or renamed that drive. Is that correct? I am basing that assumption on the "Start Here" message you are seeing. I think that is simply Seagate trying to offer you the 'chance' to install a driver so the Mac can continue to use the drive which has the NTFS formatting. That might be useful if you plan on swapping drives with a Windows user. Otherwise, I'd suggest you stop double-clicking the drive or its icon. That should stop the "Start Here..." requests. laugh.gif

TSers:Does anyone here see any reason to leave the drive with it's Windows formatting? I'm assuming the driver Seagate is offering would then allow TM to use the drive, and it can always be re-formatted if that proves to be a problem. I'm also assuming that the macOS file system, even HFS, will be less troublesome with all backup apps. dntknw.gif

Hi, Jim,

I haven't done anything to the drive, not even renaming it. Oh, and I don't have any plans for swapping drives with a Windows user.  
I only get the Start Here Mac message if I double click the drive, and then the little icon opens up and I see this:

As Jim said, you should format the drive. To repeat the instructions:

In Disk Utility, select the drive and click the Erase tab. Use the default format, which should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click Erase. The procedure takes only a few seconds, and then you'll be ready to set up Time Machine.

Thanks, Jon! I could not remember that "Erase" offered a chance to also name/re-name the drive. It appears you can "Erase" both the Drive and any partition(s) or previously entered drive name. It seems I have normally left the manufacturers 'brand' name and used "Partition" to create the name I want on the drive icon with the eject icon/button. It's been a while since I formatted a drive and I don't have one I can 'play' with... I'll amend my instructions.
Definitions:
"manufacturers named" the label that is already on the drive when received
"user supplied name" the name the user creates for the partition(s) that will be what appears on the Desltop and Finder list of connected drives

Using "Erase" on the manufacturers named item

Using "Partition" on the user supplied name

Bottom line: I don't think it makes any difference which method is used, unless one wants to make more than one partition. I like to see lots of details and pretty circle graphs, so I choose the second method. laughhard.gif

So, even though I've never used the new external HD, I still have to click Erase? (looks like I can select Erase on both?)

...and, could someone direct me again as to how to put Time Machine on it, or will I have pop up instructions once I click on Erase?  
I had mad skills in the kitchen but tech stuff, *really* not happening!

You can tell in advance if formatting is necessary. Click the new drive's desktop icon to select it, and then go to File > Get Info. The Get Info window will tell you how it is formatted. If it says "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", you're done. You can then proceed to set up Time Machine (see link below). If the icon either does not appear on the desktop or has a different format, use Disk Utility to format it via the Erase procedure that I gave you.

You can get complete instructions for setting up Time Machine by reading How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Okay, got it!  Nothing shows up that says "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" or anything like that, so I'll proceed to do the Disk Utility to formate it by way of the procedure for Erase that you gave me.  Then, onto setting up TM -- I haven't looked at the instructions yet, but thank you in advance!

P.S.  Do I select THIS and then do Erase,

I think either one will work. I only used the second one, however. I have stupidly assumed that the “brand name” text/label was hard coded in the box. whistling.gif

BTW - for everyone's info, you CANNOT use an NTFS-formatted drive for either cloned backups using CCC/SuperDuper* OR for Time Machine backups. They must be formatted MacOS Extended.

IF you wanted to share FILES (but not perform full backups) between a Mac and a PC, your best bet is to format the drive exFat, which both Windows and OS X can write to natively.

For Sooz's intended uses, reformatting for the Mac is clearly the best option.

*Note: there are ways to write to an NTSF volume from a Mac, but they require additional software for reliable performance. If you want to know more about that for some reason or other, this is a good article: https://www.howtogeek.com/236055/how-to-wri...rives-on-a-mac/

For what it's worth, I am a long time Mac User but still a novice when it comes to figuring out technical issues. These good TS folks have been life savers for me numerous times. I thank them all!  notworthy.gif

I did have two Seagate EHDs that failed on me two years ago. I did send the first one back and they replaced it quickly which was a surprise. But after the 2nd one failed, I gave up on them. Still costs me to ship to the manufacturer.

I purchased two WD drives that are holding their own. I use one for TM and one for cloning just to be safe.

Every brand has different levels of quality and testing requirements. Warranty length is usually a good indicator of quality; the longer the better. While some will tell you that you can't use a "NAS" drive, the reality is that they are simply required to withstand more vibration as when they are used in multiples in a RAID box. Of course, they are also a bit more expensive.

And, no matter what brand or level of quality, they will all eventually fail. Plan on when, not if. smile.gif
