No YouTube videos will play
« on: April 15, 2018, 05:32:15 PM »
My husband has a old Mac and was always able to watch any YouTube video(usually his rafting trip vids), but now nothing, no youtube videos show, even my dog ones.

It asks him to sign in with his Google account, which he does not have nor does he want. He has a very old gmail account but doesnt use it, unless I sent something to him on it or he hears by email something is coming in from his Grand Canyon rafting people. The screen says 'subscribe' but who wants to have to subsribe just to watch a video?
Is this because the computer is too old such as this says,
https://www.online-tech-tips.com/mac-os-x/f...os-not-playing/

Or is that they want him to create a new Google account.

He is angry as his rafting people use YouTube exclusively.

Anybody know why older Macs have been shut out of YouTube?

See if disabling extensions (and reloading the page afterwards) solves this. It works for me. I don't know which browser your husband uses, but I use Safari 11.1. I have enabled the Develop menu via Safari > Preferences > Advanced (there's a check box at the bottom of the window). When I want to disable extensions, I click the Develop menu (which now shows in the menu bar) and click Disable Extensions. After viewing what I want, I uncheck Disable Extensions and reload the page.

He could, of course, disable extensions one by one via Safari > Preferences > Extensions, but if he doesn't know which one is causing the problem, that could take awhile. It's easier to use the nuclear option (fortunately, reversible in this case).

Thank you! Not sure if he uses any extensions, but will go thru that tomorrow morning.
And will find out the OS and versions of Safari.
He said that Firefox wont let him play them either.

He doesnt use Google Maps, pictures, or any of their services except for gmail now and then.
All he wants to do is watch the rafting group's uploads of their videos and some music.

I wonder if all these sites want to get everybodys information, and make them sign up for everything. Its getting a bit invasive?

His Safari is version 4, and I cant update anything as the OS is too old. His Mac is 11 years old, and seems to work fine for his lessons and classes, email, and most everything else.
Many of them are YouTube lessons, but just recently, when he tries to watch any YouTube video, usually rafting and white water kayaking ones, it asks for him to sign in to a Google account. He doesnt have one, nor does he want one.

Its frustrating, as this just happened last month.

I think its time for a new Mac, but he says he doesnt need a new machine for the limited things he does. Wonder if I could buy an older like 3 year old Mac, a refurb. We just bought a 3 year old Chevy truck.

I would get a new or used Mac. You can peruse used Macs at this OWC page. The newer security updates alone are worth the price of admission.

Have you cleared Safari caches?
How about clearing all cookies?
Have you updated Flash? Java even?
Of course, you also have to have javascript enabled...

Done all that, but its so old, that its not dealing with stuff.
The YouTube stuff just spontaneously stopped, nothing on the computer had been changed.

So its really time for a new one, 11 years is a long time.
Computers really dont deal with age like our 2 old antique Ford pickups.

Pretty sure that youtube dumped flash and has gone to HTML5. You haven't told us the OS on your husband's Mac, but I'm guessing it's way old if he's running Safari v4. If you can't upgrade the OS, then you are likely correct that he needs a newer Mac at this point.

I went through this when Sneakers was alive. He had a bunch of software that wasn't upgradeable, and so he kept his Mac at a really old OS; and whenever he needed to shop, watch video's, etc, he'd come use mine.  tongue.gif

You might check and see if you can get a workable version of Chrome and play youtube videos that way. No idea if it will work, but can't hurt to try.

Ive tried Chrome, but maybe I should work on it a bit more.
Though Ive started to download a lot of his studies and stuff onto a big thumb drive. Its mostly all text.
His videos of the Grand Canyon and all his rafting stuff and photos, I will transfer to my extra external HD.
Photos and videos, whew they get overwhelming.
Got a lot in the cloud too.

The internet is changing so rapidly, that our old machines struggle to keep up with it.
Cant keep them running like old Fords.

According to this site you need Safari 6 or better to handle HTML5. You can check it, however, to determine if other browsers might work on his Mac, assuming you can find very early versions of them.

Decided to get a new one, as 11 years old is pretty old for a computer.
Tho everything seems to run pretty well, the browsers not too well however.
So its time! Probably go for the 21 inch low end iMac.
Been transferring all his class info and research stuff, which is text mostly, tho some graphs.
The rafting videos will be large, but will work on those too.

Whatever you get, be prepared for using macOS 10.13 and updating any third-party apps/extensions/etc. If you have anything running on FireWire, kiss them goodbye, unless you buy Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptors. You will now have USB3 ports which will be a speed boost... if you already have any USB3 devices. You can probably gain at least one USB port because the new keyboard & mouse will be wireless.

Wired keyboards and mice will still work, if that's what you prefer. I'm using the ones that came with my 2008 Mac Pro. They are still available for sale, although only the ones with metallic keys (aka chiclets) are available new. My keyboard has the plastic keys, which I greatly prefer.

Think we might go with the low end new iMac, its not that expensive, tho thats not a worry.
Then transfer his stuff over, most everything he has wont really be a problem, as he doesnt use fancy apps.
I do have some old keyboard and mice, but think he will like the wireless ones, he likes mine.

This is a good project for next week. Grandson wants to build yet another PC and make it into a Hackintosh, but granny says no thanks.
