Against my better judgement...
« on: April 25, 2018, 06:26:14 PM »
Against my better judgement, I have re-joined FaceBlast... I mean Facebook. My reason is selfish, there is a 'group' that might help with learning Swift. But it didn't take long to remember all the crud I disliked about all the "suggested" junk that FB fills the pages with. wallbash.gif

Naturally, I can find no help from FB about stopping those suggestions. I can find many vain attempts by other FB users suffering from the same overdose of suggestions. It appears that switching to Firefox may work, mostly. Some suggest AdBlock Plus, which like all the other ad blockers, doesn't affect "suggestions" (maybe Quitting/Starting Safari?).

I suppose "suggested Groups" is simply another of the annoying "features" of FB that they seem to think is something their users want. I'm absolutely positive that their advertisers want it!

Has anyone here found a way to reliably block "suggestions" for any length of time? Please share!

Tell me in more detail:

How do I find "Edit Page" ?
I'm not a complete idiot -- a few parts are missing!

Many of the methods I found reminded people that ‘similar pages’ (whatever those are) are not the same as ‘suggested groups’. wink.gif I suspect one sees suggested groups only when one is on some group’s ‘page’/area.

I also don’t think FB is very usable for sharing snippets of code. FB really seems like just a ‘stream of consciousness’ discussion. Much less appropriate like a real forum with multiple areas of different topics. FB groups are simply a collection of people with a common interest but withou the possibility to discuss anything in particular for any length of time. Of course, this is just my biased opinion and extreme dislike/distrust of ‘social media. rolleyes.gif

There are some extensions for Firefox that will help block things. I'm sorry I don't know what they are, but I'll look tomorrow and share the info if you are still searching.

Why not set a bookmark that takes you directly to the group you’ve joined and then ignore the main timeline? I do that with 2 groups I belong to — some days I’m just not interested in anything but what is posted there.

I tend to use Safari for the most part, and I’ve never liked any of the extensions for FB that Safari offers. I often visit with either Chrome or FF, and here’s the info on the 2 that I use.

FOR CHROME BROWSER:
Social Fixer
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/s...ohkohdgbb?hl=en

FIREFOX BROWSER:
Facebook Container
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ad...book-container/

The suggested groups are on that page. I don’t even go to any other page. Right now I’m just ignoring the suggestions. But the group doesn’t seem to offer any helps to any questions anyway. It is probably just a way of ‘networking’ with others interested in the topic. If nothing more than “likes” occur in the next several days, I’ll just dump my registration... again. rolleyes.gif

The suggested groups are on that page.
Okay, but the groups would all have their own page, and you should be able to bookmark those. I belong to the "Willow and Thatch" group. Their posts show up on my main timeline (Facebook.com), but I also follow the link below to reach their page directly. That way I only scroll through their posts and the responses from other members. This is what I’m talking about when I suggest bookmarking the groups you joined. It's a bit like bookmarking the Tech forum page here, http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index.php?showforum=1 and only visiting the tech forum, rather then using the "forums" link http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index.php?act=idx. Does that clarify?

That's already the way I get there. But there is still a list of 5 "suggested groups" on the page. wallbash.gif It looks like FB automatically creates a "shortcut" to this group that is probably on any other page I might visit. They obviously want us to visit lots of places/groups/people the better to evaluate our interests and connect us to lists they can sell to advertisers. I think I've had 12 "likes" to my intro post where I say I re-joined FB with fear and trepidation! laughhard.gif

Only good thing is that I actually got an answer that may solve the programming problem I wrote about there.

Okay, I understand much better now. This goes back to what dakota posted a few posts ago (see quote below) ... this is a preference that the Admin of the group controls. They can turn it on, off, adjust, etc. You as a general member can't do anything about it other than to ask the group admin to turn it off. BTW, does this mean I shouldn't send you a friend request at FB?  rofl.gif  rofl.gif  rofl.gif

I assume anyone can send me 'friend' requests. But that doesn't mean I have to accept/grant them. No offense, of course, but hopefully I'll never see any requests.

I have "nailed down" every setting I can find to try to limit my exposure on FB. I intentionally used a fake last name when I registered, also. rolleyes.gif

I changed my birthdate to a blend of several family members, and while I was at it, I made myself younger.  toothgrin.gif
