Safari 12
« on: September 17, 2018, 07:10:08 PM »
I went ahead and downloaded and installed Safari 12. The first things I noticed:

1. An alert popped up that told me "Safari turned off extensions that show down web browsing. 'Adblock Plus' was turned off. You can find newer extensions in the App Store or Safari Extensions Gallery.'" I went looking or Adblock Plus, but it's not there. I finally opted for "AdBlock for Safari" -- however, I now have to start over with my selection of whitelisted sites, and this is time spent that I shouldn't have to spend.

2. My Toolbar (previously customized) had been rearranged and changed to the default setting.I was able to change it back, but, again, that was time spent that I shouldn't have had to spend.

3. The icons for my gmail tabs (I keep them pinned) have changed, and they look weird--but there's nothing I can do about that.

Otherwise, everything is working fine.

Have you considered replacing the new version with the previous version (11.1.2 ?) in TM or a cloned backup? BTW, what enticed you to update to 12? Never mind, I just returned to the Mac and see there are 5 updates available. One is Safari 12. No thank you... The iWork Sweet can also wait. And I downloaded the GM of Xcode over the weekend.

As for AdBlock Plus, mine seems to be in ~/Library/Safari/Extensions. :dntknw:

I got that warning about Ghostery and AdBlock, saying that they had been disabled and telling me that they could slow the browsing experience. I re-enabled both, and so far, I don't see any problem.

I don't run Ghostery, but received the same alert with AdBlockPlus. I also get an alert about things being out of date, yet they aren't. I tried AdBlock for Safari, but it's horrid IMHO. To whitelist a site, I have to manually type the URL! No option to "whitelist this site", or even to copy/paste the URL. I went ahead and typed in a couple of sites, and AdBlock for Safari didn't retain the information. 😡

I've now re-enabled ABP, and so far all is good.

Other then the initial oddities, I'm finding Safari 12 to be a grand browser. Sites that used to stall, now work smoothly; FB doesn't snag on videos; and Adblock Plus is running smoothly. I recommend this browser in El Cap.

Good to know - but annoying that customizations aren't carried over. That's not kosher, IMHO.

I haven't had time to update anything lately, and my hard drive is almost full on the iMac; I had to drop everything today because things became almost non-operational, so emergency action had to be taken! You know it's bad when you get the warning that the Trash can't be emptied because your disk is too full. Restarting in Safe Mode fixed that, thank goodness. Kinda hard to free up space if you can't empty that trash! Major pruning in progress - THEN will do updating.

The old version of AdBlock Plus stopped working and *POOF*  disappeared from my toolbar. Loverly. Then a new tab magically opened telling me I should go to the app store and download the new, improved version. I went to the app store, found ADP, installed it and ...
1. My selection of whitelisted sites is gone, so prefs didn't transfer.
2. I can't visit a site and select "whitelist this site". No. I have to open the preference box and either copy/paste the URL or manually type it.
3. Worst of all -- IT. DOESN'T. WORK. PROPERLY. I'm seeing ads all over the place. Might as well not have this extension.

Sure hope someone gets a good ad blocking extension, or I may switch to Firefox for my browser. *insert angry face here*

I've read that many extensions have been disabled because of newer, tighter security and data collection standards from Apple. There are two different 'flavors' of uBlock, one calls the other one 'evil' or at least not trustworthy... There are also too many "AdBlock..." extensions! Some have found that Ghostery has been collecting data.

Nope...biweekly. Recycling every week. (Does this mean I should have a PC? LOL...)

I've updated Safari on the mini. It only had one extension, 1Password, and it was left alone and still shows its icon on the Safari tool/title bar. May take the plunge on my iMac next week... Monday is garbage (both types) pickup day here. :whew: :coolio:

In the FWIW department, I used my laptop this morning, and it is running Safari 11.x, and I had the same issue with Adblock Plus: the alert, it disappeared from my browser toolbar, etc. I went ahead and installed the New & Improved (HA) version from the app store. Not a fan as it allows way too many ads, but don't see what else can be done.

I have AdBlock Plus as well on my MBP, so decided to give downloading Safari 12 a whirl. It downloaded, installed and ABP is still running fine, along with 1Password and SocialFixer (a great FB add-on). It did disable another plugin that I had installed but wasn't using.

What version of ABP were you using? I've got 2.01 - but I also had/have "automatically update extensions" checked, so it's possible that I had the newer version already. Since it only updated a few days ago, it's possible I haven't been to sites I had whitelisted already. And you're right - it does lose the list one had. :(

My version was 1.something, so it was out of date. I do have "automatically update extensions" checked, but for some reason my version never updated. It's update now, and I’m slowing remaking my whitelist (which fortunately is short).

I'll look into SocialFixer. Anything to make FB more useable. HAHA

One of my ongoing annoyances with FB is that it kept switching to "Top Stories" (as selected by IT, not by me!) and I just wanted "Most Recent" - Social Fixer makes that stick. For that alone, it's worth it. It has lots of other features though. :)
