Many long time Mac users are font fans. When the Mac first arrived, it was the first time we could easily use different fonts any time we wanted. Unfortunately, the use of fonts did not come with an instruction manual which lead to some horrendous combinations and no shortage of ugly pages. It even lead to arguments about white text on black background versus black text on white background and which was better. (Apparently Apple has decided to bring many of those arguments back with "Dark Mode"!
)
Now we have a study by experts in many fields delivering a new font that is intentionally hard to read! The title of the font gives you a hint at why it was created: "Sans Forgetica", "Sans" you've seem before, it simply means there are no serifs, those little pointy things on the tips of each letter. The "etica" part is just a nod to the extremely widely used font "Helvetica" which is probably available in every operating system in the world. The 'clue' is the "Forget" part. This new font was designed from the start as an aid to help the reader to remember what has been read. The characters are supposed to force the readers brain to simply pay more attention to what is being read. It is basically an 'anti-speed-readable' font. Each character has specific pieces cut out which forces the reader's eyes and brain to absorb the whole word and idea. At least that's the plan/hope of these academics!
There is a Chrome Extension that you can install to see how it might help or hinder your memory retention. You can, of course, install it on any computer, but don't expect your readers to respond to your missives. They may just remove you from their Contacts!
