1Password and Dropbox
« on: October 15, 2018, 08:46:09 PM »
I am having major probs with 1P syncing correctly with Dropbox. I've gone through all the steps shown at both the 1P and Dropbox sites, and nothing is working. I'm now considering either using iCloud or setting up my 1P acct to handle it (do you pay for this? I haven't completely researched.)

Has/Is anyone else had/having this problem? If so, how did you solve it?

Pulling my hair out here.

As best I can tell, that involves the subscription model. They make it pretty hard to even find the perpetual price now...

Using 1PW 7, I just changed to iCloud from Dropbox within the month. I'm not using the subscription model, just the old perpetual payment. I assume you are not using the subscription method either since that uses a sync method with 1PW servers (I think).

Another factor in my problems is having an older version on my Mac mini that may have come from the App Store. The newer version on my iMac comes from AgileBits.

I tried to get all three apps to use DB, but I kept getting a request to provide a secret password for the DB folder being used by 1PW! I could not find any such p/w nor was I able to get 1PW to accept my pointing it to my DB folder. :wallbash:

Additionally, the 'Help' files on the 1PW site are a little different depending on which version you might have, IMHO.

I finally took the easy way out and started syncing with iCloud on the old iPad, iPhone and iMac. I am still using version 6.x on the Mac mini and have decided not to worry about updating it, much less to get it synced since it is rarely used to surf. I think I can still get it to sync using the WLAN method, but I have not 'messed' with it in over a week.

I have been able to get help from 1PW Support fairly quickly, however, I suspect they will require a new license to update the Mac mini version and it's just not worth that extra cost!

If all else fails, I know a good wig supplier. :scram:

Yes, after 20 minutes of clicking links I have given up trying to find this info. I don't want to start a trial to find this out, I just want the info.  <_<

I'm still using 1PW 6.   I don't think I want to upgrade until I get this fixed.

I've not had DB ask me for a password, but yesterday I got this alert that my 1P file was corrupted and it had been replaced with a previous file. Three recently changed passwords were now reverted back to the old passwords. :wallbash:  Fortunately, I was able to go the sites and update them again--and this time I've kept the info in a text file until I get this straightened out. *not safe*

Oh, and looking at DB: the folder that sits on my iMac shows it was update today (correct), but when I go to DB via my browser, it shows the file as being from 2012!

Now I'm terrified of changing to iCloud. I have to research how to do this, where do I find a current, correct file, etc? Oh gads.

I wish I had some magic solution here - I have 1PW set up to use Dropbox, with 3 Macs, 2 iPads and 1 iPhone and it all works flawlessly on all of them. My iPad is syncing now - V7 on the Mac required a different folder on Dropbox as it wouldn't sync to the old one, but the iPad found it without any input from me, after a few minutes (wasn't sure what it was doing for a while there...) I just updated to Version 7 now - but 6 was working fine. Also using the non-subscription model, as it works out cheaper for me. Last updated it in February 2016, so 32 months X $2.99 USD is a lot more than $50 USD or $66 CDN I just paid for the upgrade to 7 (I can't remember what the upgrade to 6 cost - but assume that it was in the same ballpark).

BTW - if you do decide to upgrade to 7, you download it and install it and then start it up, and there is the option to purchase it in the 1P menu - click that, and the page it takes you to has the option to buy the perpetual license. There is no way to opt to do it without downloading it first.

What is your DB 1PW file suffix? Here's what my version 7 setup in my Mac mini looks like. I'm probably going to revert to my v.6. :wallbash:

In my 'messin' around with v. 7 on my iMac/iPad/iPhone, I managed to end up with two 1PW "Vaults". One is "Personal" the other has another (misspelled name). The result is that I have two DB icons in a Finder Sidebar with the two names in parenthesis.

I'm running 6 and this is what it looks like. I'm guessing if I "copied" that to my own desktop, I could then upload it to iCloud and point everything to that file -- and then dump it out of DB?

Thanks. Once I've got everything synced, I'll upgrade. Appreciate the directions.

Do you remember where/how you purchased the version of 1PW you are using?

I think the "vault" suffix changed ~2015/16. It may be different for the App Store version. At any rate, I would suggest contacting AgileBits Support and describing your problem. There are some posts back in 2015 referring to the ".agilekeychain" suffix and DB. You may have noticed that the suffix on my image is ".opvault".

By all means, establish a user registration at the Support forums. They have solutions and help from the company and other users.

Purchased direct from AgileBits, and I do have a user registration at their forums. I will contact them tomorrow. Thanks.

Why not just disconnect it from Dropbox (back it up first, just in case...) - where it says "sync" in the DB preferences, select "none," and then remove the file from Dropbox and then perhaps try syncing it again? Seems like it might work... I just have one vault - it's called "Primary". I have the same file suffix on the V7 1PW vault - the earlier one from V6 was renamed "1Password.legacyagilekeychain" in the process of updating and is still in DB.

No - I wouldn't do it that way. Just change the "sync" to iCloud and let it do its thing. As for Dropbox, have you tried setting the sync to "none", then removing the file you currently have in DB (move it to the desktop or something) and trying again?

I think Paddy's suggestion (in post #10) is the best way of getting the vault re-newed on DB. From then on, you can go back and forth, just to keep things pretty much the same on both 'clouds'. You can also use the "WLAN" method and have a backup on your Mac. You can't have too many backups!
