Mojave problems
« on: October 18, 2018, 09:41:16 AM »
My business partner has by accident uploaded Mojave and is now experiencing all sorts of problems.

MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.3 15" Retina 2012   2.3 GHz Core i7 (I7-3615QM)

Intro.   June 11, 2012   Disc.   February 13, 2013
Order   MC975LL/A   Model   A1398 (EMC 2512)
Family   Retina Mid-2012   ID   MacBookPro10,1
RAM   8 GB   VRAM   1 GB*
Storage   256 GB SSD   Optical

How does he go back to the previous version?

I will make sure that I do not upgrade.

Here are some sites explaining how. It was a simple search with DuckDuckGo (my preferred search engine), I'm sure Google would work just as well. ;)

I have not updated yet, so I cannot vouch for any of these methods. Please read and follow these instructions carefully. The first step is to always have a complete, bootable back up!! Preferably more than one!:yes:Second step using any computer: Always read and understand the choices in all dialog boxes. If you have any questions or doubts, ask for help. [RANT]I fault Apple for this event. Their incessant, nagging 'OS Update' dialogs are intended, in my humble opinion, to trick the user into making the update.[/RANT]

What?! Wait! Is there a way to upgrade one's self? I could use that! YMMV, but I have a lot of bugs, faults, broken parts that could certainly benefit from improved versions!

Out of curiosity, what were the issues he was experiencing? Are they old software related, perchance?

That MBP should run Mojave, in theory.

I've been too busy to update anything lately - so can't render any opinions on the new OS, but ALWAYS do a full backup before updating anything. As Jim said. ;)

Was he not running TimeMachine, at least? You can revert using that...

I'm particularly interested in the compatibility of MS Entourage 2008 with Mojave. So far, it has worked with each OS upgrade but I use it constantly and don't want to make a substitution, if possible. Roaring Apps doesn't have any data yet.

Apple have found out that there is a problem with Mojave and when installed because of Sierra it can damage your hard drive, comment came from Apple Support. They are now reloading onto the hard drive, to see if they can fix it remotely from the server - after Command R first aid followed by install Mac OS Mojave.

Details please?

You mentioned Sierra, was Mojave installed on 10.12 (Sierra) or 10.3 (High Sierra)?

Although I have not yet installed Mojave myself, I am encouraged by the positive comments in this FTM thread.

I'm hoping that Larry will report back about specifics from "Apple tech". It's hard to make decisions about things when all the info is generic and lacking in details. Right now, we're not even sure what OS his friend was updating from, much less what hardware he was using. :dntknw: :coolio: :whistling:

Haven't heard from the OP yet, but I decided to make the belated leap yesterday. So far, so good... for 12 hours, anyway.

Only complaints are from apps/plugins that need to comply with the new access privileges. CCC Also reported it could not dismount the drive it normally uses. I suspect it is also the access 'rights' thing.

I'm testing Dark mode. Might be nice to have the control a bit more granular. I still don't care for light colored/white text on dark/black background. Mail and Calendar is the only apps I've seen that forces reversed text/backgrounds. At least the Safari allows a site to use their own colors. I suspect that most of Apple's apps/controls will end up like Mail...

I do appreciate having the Menu Bar hide. One more line of space for every window!

I haven't upgraded to Mojave yet, but just in case someone else has the issue in this article, read Is Mojave Slowing Your Mac Down.

I updated to Mojave today. The update took about 1 hour 15 minutes and the important things seem to be working. Entourage 2008, my preferred email client, is fine (it's 32-bit). The one glitch that I noticed, so far, is that the update did not recognize Epson printer app. I located it in a clone and copied it to ~/Library/Printers. Printing now works. I don't know why it had disappeared from that location in Mojave.

Naturally, I backed up everything before updating (and a good thing, too).

One new dialog that will be coming up is when an app wants to access System functions or hardware. It's part of the increased security updates that prevents access to the System and hardware. Most of my dialogs have been in the "Full Disk Access" area. The 'fix' usually involves opening the Security & Privacy Prefs and adding the app approved/enabled list.
