new way of getting phone # for spamming
« on: November 21, 2018, 08:20:04 AM »
This morning in our local paper there was an ad for cars, and my brother has a BMW for sale.
So I googled the phone number several times and reverse lookup, all listed as spam
Guessing that this is a way to get people to call them, and thus adding them to their spam 'live' numbers.
I dont know much about this, but my brother had been caught a couple of times with this kind of thing.

What is your take on this?

I agree that it's spam. I just did a DuckDuckGo search (I stopped using Google) and got nothing but suspicious comments. Don't bite!

Thats really interesting as I just got an email back from my newspaper that this guy is legit.
So I will call him and see if he indeed does want my brother's old cars.

Let me get this straight; Your brother has a car sale. Another lad puts an ad in the paper saying he wants to buy a car, but he wants someone to call him?
Strike 1: The ad doesn't even pass the smell test.
Strike 2: You've already found evidence that it's a SCAM.
Strike 3: You want to take another "pitch" because the guy paid for the add?
(This is, technically, Strike 4: Who is some guy at the paper and how would be know the add buyer is "legit"?)
Why not let your brother redeem himself and put him at bat?!

I wouldn't touch that phone n umber with a ten foot pole or bat! :nono: :wallbash:

It sure rang like a fake to me, but this is what I got back from the newspaper department in red below. I am going to suggest to my brother to give the car away free locally to my friend who does restoring, or to our Tech school department who teach car repair stuff. The BMW is drivable, but very old.  The next antique truck I am planning to give away, has people wanting it.
So we wont do any business with this guy, as he still gives me the worries. He could very well be selling the phone numbers to a third party.

"The spam alerts when you google it if you look deep into it are from 2015-2016 and mostly for faxes.  He started off his business model trying to fax people & businesses not realizing that it is legally considered spam like unwanted phone calls.

And he is as legitimate as the research we've been able to do and conversations we have had with him.  As always, I would caution your brother as with anything else to do his due diligence and if anything feels off, I certainly would not pursue."

Not to mention that putting ads in papers, even local ones, isn't cheap and you'd have to be completely insane if you thought it was a good way to collect phone numbers for spamming. That doesn't pass the the smell test, Jim. ;)

And the newspaper's explanation makes sense.

Double-post:
A couple of apps are mentioned in this Medium article that could be helpful with Text messages and iPhone SPAM/SCAM calls.
