imac won't start up
« on: August 03, 2003, 10:33:57 PM »
Well, it did once.  Started it, monitor came on with the little folder, nothing on the new hard drive, so not surprising.

Pushed button off for restart, held down C key, little light on front of machine did not turn green, stayed orange.  Well, it's a tray loading CD-ROM, so, out with CD, try again.  Nada.  Tried Delete, Option, Shift, Control, nope.

While the iMac was opened I replaced the PRAM battery, but it had sat in the bottom of my purse for six months or so. eek2.gif Possible?

Will leaving it plugged in all night create a "trickle charge"?

Am I grasping at straws?

Help!!

I replaced a drive in my G4 tower, and it wouldn't retart too.  I took it in for repairs and they said it was the logic board.  Cost me over $300 bucks to get working again.  I never really was told why the logic board shorted out, but it could have been due to static electricity or just a coincidence.  I know that iMacs are even tighter space-wise than my G4, so I hope you didn't touch too much in there and fried the motherboard.  Let us know how is turns out.

Did you try zapping the PRAM?

It is possible the battery may have gone bad considering the high heat and humidity where you live. Batteries should be stored in a cool place.

Put the old battery back in (if you still have it) to see if that's the problem.

So. What was wrong and what fixed it? smile.gif

Leo. Static Electricity in Florida in Summer is probably not a problem.

Unless maybe the air conditioner is at 60. And humidity at 20%.

On a wool carpet.

More likely a problem with rust. wink.gif

NOthing goes as easy as one would like......in other words, stand by for developments.

Bad battery, a CD that will sometimes allow itself to be read, and sometimes not, and it can be in the middle of installation sad.gif and trying to copy things that want to reference the old hard drive, even though everything was moved and......

Stayed tuned for news at 11. wallbash.gif

It's installed and running.

30 G seems like a lot for a hard drive!  So much space, so little time!

Installation was not as bad as I feared, The iMac.com has BIG pictures and little words  Some of the instructions were a bit confusing, no, I DON'T have 4 cables, and it's only three screws!, thank you very much, but overall fear itself was the biggest obstacle.

Should've taken the advice mantra to heart "Don't do too many things at once".  Replacing the PRAM battery at the same time was a mistake.  When it didn't restart right away, the mantra would've saved me about two hours of troubleshooting.  Fortunately, for me, someone here had battery problems recently, so the advice stuck with me.  I fished the old battery out of the trash, replaced it, and the start up problem was solved.

The tray loading CD player continues to be a problem.  Sometimes it will read, sometimes not!  It will not read the entire installation disk for OS 9.  It hangs so a clean installtion of the OS was not possible.  Fortunately, Retrospect has a "duplicate" function, so I copied the entire old drive onto one of the partitions of the new, and I'm back in business.  Minor problems with files on the new referencing the old, but those will work out.  (Netscape is the worst, so far, but it is one I use the most).

The only way to determine which is referencing which is to turn off the old, but that is made easy with the USB enclosure.  nono.gif Just remember to drag the icon to the trash BEFORE turning the drive off.  nono.gif

Now, time to decide whih version of 10 to purchase.  Must find out just what y'all have been experiencing. laugh.gif

Well. Keep that Partition size limit in mind for Jaguar. smile.gif

Lowest I've seen for the Full Install. $90

http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/macosx102jag1.html

They want $120 for 8.5  ohmy.gif

http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/software.html

If you do decide to purchase that.

It wouldn't hurt to link from lowendmac.

Might make them a couple dollars. smile.gif

Kelly:

I just clicked that hardcoremac at yahoo link you posted, and their prices are incrediblly high.  e.g. internal hard drives ($250 for a Maxtor 80Gb). I could get 160GBs that price.  They listed a logic board for my digital audio G4 at over $650.  I just had it replaced at an authorized apple repair shop for $400 parts & labor included.   dry.gif   I think you rethink your recommendation.

Yes Leo. I noticed the high prices for other things. smile.gif

All I recommended there is Jaguar.

If you can find that for less let us know. smile.gif

This method will get you Jag for $64.

Go to here at OWC to get the 10.1 CD.  It's $19.

Then go here to get the upgrade to 10.2.  It's $45.

Don't know about shipping.

krissel:

In my opinion, that work around is more trouble than it's worth.  If I was going to buy to Jaguar today, I'd want the latest version on CD, becuase it will be a hassle if I had to re-install.  The upgrade CD will want the original CD, and you'll be forced to install twice and then upgrade again to 10.2.6 after that.   That's a lot of installing for the  small savings.

Luckily I am already up to date, and waiting for Panther!   whistling.gif
