New(s) from Apple
« on: March 26, 2019, 09:12:02 AM »
We may complain about new Apple hardware making only small changes, even in their mobile devices, but we can 't complain about how they seem to always come up with ways to help us empty our wallets! :whistling:

They announced, with great fanfare, several "new" services that promise more of what they tell us we want. Apparently, playing on the ability of adding the "i" to create demand, they are now adding "+" to current products: "Apple News +", "Apple TV +", "Apple Pay +", etc., etc. I think "+" mainly means our costs, if we partake, will be increasing? :laughhard:

I read quite a bit about the Apple News+, and apparently the "+" stands for less,  :whistling: as in trimmed down, censored, “curated” news but without, or less, ads.  :dntknw:

It costs $9.99/month. That's $9.99 a month more than the regular Apple News. That's what I mean by increasing costs.

Most "news" apps are self-censored because most people don't want all sides of the news. It's been that way on the web since forever. I can still remember AOL touting the fact that one could pick and choose what 'news' appeared on their/your home page.

BTW, I left out another extremely enticing service that I also won't be using: Apple Games (+ ?). :whistling:

I wish Apple luck, but they are late in all these areas. I think they should stick to improving the user interface of devices and the advantages of having the hardware and software under one (sometimes cohesive) roof. Remember "Apple Human Interface Guidelines"? I think I still have a copy of those massive books! Most were several inches thick and could not be placed on normal book shelves! Should never be placed on top shelves in earthquake-prone areas either! :nono:

I would be more interested in Apple News if it (a)wasn't going to offer a stripped down version of the Toronto Star (ie: you can only get the entire newspaper if you subscribe directly, which we currently do) and the New York Times. As it stands, I'll continue with my subscriptions to both. Offering neutered versions of things seems counter-intuitive, though I suppose some are ok with that. I read the Star using PressReader - gives me the same layout as the newspaper.

I have a free subscription to Texture, which came with my Rogers internet years ago and was supposed to go away quite a while ago, but strangely enough, still works...and the magazines it offers will be the same as those Apple offers, given that Texture is now owned by Apple. I suspect they'll kill it off now and I'll have to pay...they already killed off the Windows Texture app last May. :( Not that I used it much...though it has lots of magazines I like to read, it seems I never get to them!! And, of course, our subscription here in Canada will be more than the US one - $12.99/mo.

True, but you get to live up there for that meager extra cost. Seems like a fair trade. Of course, "the grass is always greener..." :coolio: :D
