Many older "smart phones" have pretty sad cameras. But the more expensive, newer ones can take surprisingly good and quite high resolution images.
I have an iPhone 7 and it takes what I consider to be garbage photos. Not the quality I expected from this iPhone at all. In fact, that's why I bought the little Canon that I now carry everywhere.

Great cameras do not take great photos. A great photographer, however, can make a camera great again (no political innuendos, please). There is no substitute for a knowledgeable person behind the camera, whatever brand it is.
Definitely! Sneakers was an amazing photographer. He tried to teach me how to find the right focus spot, to be patient, etc., but it never took. I take decent photos, and toss most of what I take. LOL

HERESY!!! :stop: :swoon: :flail: How do you expect Apple's iCloud extra cost additional storage space and the hard drive makers to make any money if you don't save every last image for posterity?!!!! :tears:

You might want to check your Camera Settings. Are you using HDR? "Live Photo"? Perhaps a "Filter" that needs to be changed/turned OFF? Also, check to be sure a finger is not covering the lens... :p

Camera settings are what came with the iPhone, I've never touched/changed them.
