My wife is back in Paris and that means im back to spending the house money on, uh, home improvements.
Such as ...
I got the program Bias Deck Le and it is great for home multitrack recording. I got pretty good results on my G3 (OSX) using the apple mic but i want to step up, if only because it looks so silly. I guess the first thing is to digitize the signal, via a USB or firewire input device. Then I'd need a couple of mics, good enough for music recording (electric guitars, bass, voice). Anyone here do this on a budget? I get laughed off the real recording usenet groups when i mention im looking in the $100-$200 range.

Not sure how you'd connect everything, I only work with a mixer at church (multiple channels - mic's, CD/Tape, line inputs [accoustic guitar, keyboards, etc]). I would suggest a small mixer (8 - 12 channels, maybe even fewer!) but there may be simpler/cheaper ways to connect to the 'puter.

We use Shure Beta 87's for vocal sounds and SM57's for instruments (piano and possibly an old electronic organ). But these are not cheap. I think the 87's run at least $300.

Another reason to use a mixer is the need for phantom power for most condensor mic's. Some mat still use a battery, but I think those are history! The mixer will provide that DC voltage. A 'dynamic' mic doesn't need that voltage, but it will not be as sensitive to lower sound levels and not have the same frequency coverage of a condensor mic.

Thanks. Those look good. I was most concerned about connecting to the computer, probably via usb. Anyone have thoughts on this?
