Dropbox mistake
« on: July 20, 2019, 06:25:15 PM »
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/07/dropbox-silently-installs-new-file-manager-app-on-users-systems/

I've not seen this, yet, although the drop down window (last photo) is new and I do see that. I'm in the process of moving everything away from dropbox, and will be closing my free account.

Their new limits of 3 computers/tables/phones have caused no amount of frustration with the music team at church as the sound room can no longer access the Sunday slide presentation in our dropbox. I now have to arrive early, with the keynote presentation on a flash drive. In order to add our new sound room computer to our account, we have to go to a paid business acct at $150 per user per year:eek:

Not a fan of dropbox any longer.

Thanks for the alert. The link does show an update that claims this was a mistake. Not that it isn't going to happen, just that it was not meant to be seen by so many folks so soon. I've never used all the free space I've had and now have a TB at MS, should I ever decide to trust them! :coolio:

DB has always wished to be a commercial product, the free storage has always been minimal in size and scope, but it did fill a need. Once a company becomes public, it often becomes more concerned about its stock price. It used to be unique, but cloud storage is now a commodity and it is fairly easy and much cheaper to set up now that when they started. But all that means there is also more competition.

It was useful while it lasted, I've got lots of local drive space. probably time to 'drop the "box"'.

And the United States = The Banana system

I have a paid Dropbox account at the moment - I've got a few clients who use it and one who uses it extensively for a large yearbook project we work on each year. However, I'm seriously considering the alternatives since DB raised their prices (yes, we got more storage, but I can't cope with syncing 2TB anyway, since none of my internal drives are that big!). There are LOTS of them now:
