Update Agent or what?
« on: August 05, 2003, 04:16:39 PM »
I went to the Insider website at
http://www.insidersoftware.com/index.html
to update all my apps, etc.
But they're not taking customers at the moment.

I'm using OS9.1 now and moving to a new dual G4 OSX in 2 weeks.
How do I find out what I should upgrade to make it work in OSX?
I know which of my main apps are OSX native - Quark, Photoshop, Freehand.
I'd thought I would do all this now before I get the new baby!

Not sure about many of the smaller apps, drivers, shareware stuff, etc.
That's where I need some good advice.

Hey Raven, I saw your note yesterday, and thought someone else might answer. . .I'm a little at a loss as to what the question is; I clicked on your link, and it took me to the FontAgent website, which I don't think has anything to do with checking all your software for available updates.  I DO remember something, way back, about a website that will check all your software for updates, but darned if I can remember what it is.

I'm pretty sure though, that the lack of response didn't have anything to do with the shower, or the lack of. . . wink.gif

I thought every knew about this software - Update Agent from Insider Software.  I'm usually the last newbie to find it out.
Try the 2nd page on the above link...
http://www.insidersoftware.com/products/up...gent/index.html

Is this the best or is there something else to replace it, as it's not shipping at the moment?

Known about Update Agent Raven but I'm not a big fan of any application/program that dictates what I want too update.
OR to put it another way, not to fond of something I have to download that tells me what to download/update.

Still begs the question...
How do you easily find out what software needs to be updated from what sources and at what cost?

My Apple System Profiler tells me I have 40 control panels, 185 extensions, 335 applications. Whew!

Update Agent offers to run through them and list what needs to be updated.
Is that different from Apple's Software Updater? (never used it)

Raven,
Out of those 335 Applications you have, how many do you use often?

Make a list of them and you can go to the Apple link in my earlier thread
and see how they work with OSX and Classic. They are listed alphabetically and
you can go to the sites of the developers.

Don't worry about Control panels and Extensions. That's not an issue with X.

Apple's Software Updatres only deals with Apple Software. smile.gif

When you get OS X run it and see.

It will make more sense then.

I don't think most people try to automate this process.

It's just hit and miss.

Like Gary says. Check on the ones that are important to you.

Try not to worry so much.

Enjoy your new machine when you get it. smile.gif
