"Jag" is here!
« on: August 06, 2003, 01:38:55 PM »
Okay. "Jag" just arrived on my door step.  biggrin.gif  So ... before I go install this puppy ... and tips, tricks, warnings? Things I should back up? If I need to back up anything other than doc's - please tell me how.

Also ... I've been considering reformatting before I do this, and cutting my partitions down to 2 or 3 instead of 4. I want to do this for two reasons:

1. the set up is clunky (I just *knew* I'd never do much in OS X, so when I got my puter I set it up like I had in OS 7 and 8).

2. My main partition is getting full, and since OS X prefers things in certain places ... if I had only 2 or 3 partitions ... I'd have room and I think it would be easier to navigate around.

I'd appreciate comments on doing the reformatting, or just going forward as things stand. Also, if I reformat (60GB HD), should I go with 2 or 3 partitions?

TIA -
kimmer

Just got Jag?? With Panther around the corner?  ohmy.gif

Ok..first about partitions.  I would only go with 2 maximum. 1 for OSX and one for OS9 if you wanted to keep it.

What I would do: wipe everything, partition the HD into 2, and install 9 on one and X on the other. Give your main OS the bigger side (or split it evenly into 2).

What I would do if I didn't need classic/OS9 (which I don't, so this is what I did): Wipe the HD, make 0 partitions, install OSX.

Backup: Since more than likely you are going to do a clean install, here is what I would do:
Emails: I have a hotmail/Yahoo account and send all my important email there...for safe-keeping until I can send them back. JUST IN CASE.
Music that I don't have CD's for: burn them to CD or put them on external HD. This is mainly for iTMS music I purchased.
Photographs: I burn them to CD or upload them to my server.
Misc. files that you want to keep: burn to CD or upload to .Mac or whereever you might have space.

I would only keep what is important...otherwise you can get the file again.

It's too bad you don't have iSync..cause then it saves a lot of time for Safari Bookmarks and such.

Also, another thing, what I do is go to each site that I have bookmarked and copy/paste the url (especially those that I don't recall easily enough) and send them to my hotmail account via email. Makes them clickable  smile.gif

Other than that..I say go for it and install.

I'm cheap - comes from living with a Scotsman all these years. laugh.gif  Plus I'm not sure my Mac will handle Panther.

I have several games and such that only work in Classic, so I do want to keep OS9. What you suggested is what I was thinking I would do.

Backing up my email is as simple as burning it to a floppy (thank you Eudora!), and bookmarks I'll turn into html pages and back up. I don't have music, but I backup my photo's and such every month, so I'm covered there as well.

Perhaps in my future? wink.gif

So that just leaves me making sure I have all my serial numbers and such.

*groan*  This is a bigger project than I realized. I need to go into some of my system files and makes notes so I can reset all the internet settings and such.

Now I'm remembering why I put this off ...

Thanks for the tips John!

Kimmer,

I put it off too. biggrin.gif

I can't remember which Mac you have, I take it is a model that doesn't need the OS on the first 8 gigs of the HDD.

http://www.macattorney.com/tutorial.html

If so I think John covered it well.  smile.gif

Try and figure out how much you will need for your OS9 partition with games, apps, docs, utilities etc. Then leave some extra room and give the rest to OS10.2.

I suppose if you slit it down the middle it would be good. Everyone's setup seems different.
I have OS10.2.6 on one HDD(60gigs) and OS9.2.2 on another(40gigs).

Just remember to back up anything you can't afford or want to loose!

Good luck and Happy trails!  smile.gif blush-anim-cl.gif

I forgot how big my second HDD was. 40 instead of 30gigs.blush-anim-cl.gif

What my brother does, and I should too but I keep forgetting, is putting all of his serial #'s and such on a file, printing it out whenever a new one comes out. Makes it real handy.

Are you upgrading from 10.1? What mac do you have?

Other than the fact I really like her sense of humor, politeness, guess I'd better toss in the fact Sneakers is her hubby [add good taste], Kimmer has a 933 Gary S. smile.gif

Kimmer, John just about covered it all.
60 gig harddrive: Give Jag plenty of room for growth. OS9 maybe 10 or less.
You might want to think about a third partition for games .. apps .. whatever.
Example. I created this partition (Jag) at just short of 30gbs. I still have slightly over 20gbs available.

Kimmer: the advise given above is the same I'd give.  Let me add just one important step...  If you do format and partition the drive first, then be sure to click the add OS 9 drivers check box on BOTH partitions.  Even though one partition is OS X, it still needs this driver for "Classic" usage.

She has a 933?? dang...what I would do, seeing as it's a PM, is put another HD in there and put an OS on each drive! Forget partitioning!

How much ram do you have in that thing, Kimmer? Add more...can't go wrong there! smile.gif

Cool. Currently my OS9 is only using 2GB of the 14 available. So 10 would give me room to "grow" if needed. I didn't know you could make the partitions different sizes. Nice to know this.

This is what I'm still deciding on. Having some apps and such on a different partition sometimes makes OS X unhappy, same with "docs". :-/

lj ... thanks for the tip.

JohnK, I checked, yes, I have a 933. LOL  When Sneakers bought this PM for me he maxed out the ram. I'd love another HD, but I don't think I can sweet talk Sneakers in to that. Might be worth a try ... but ... there's other things I'd rather have first. wink.gif

Thanks for all the help, and the encouragement. If I had done as John's brother all along .. I'd be in better shape. But I didn't ... wallbash.gif ... so I'll take a few days to find all the info. I will let you know how things go. Trust me on that. biggrin.gif

I just wanted to say that when i installed it and the thing they didnt say on the package or anywhere was this... so BEWARE!

YOU NEED 9.2.2

in order for jag to work PROPERLY.
Eitherelse it'll go bezerk! i mean it may not when you install it, but perhaps a few days later or when you turn on your computer a few times. my poor g4 was so sick that i had to totally wipe out everything cos sometimes it would open and sometimes it wouldnt sense the harddrive. called APPLE and they said that i needed 9.2.2 and they are very specific on that.

good luckkkkk

Yes Kimmer. Partitioning is a piece of cake. wink.gif

Just choose the number and slide the little bar to change sizes. smile.gif

Just so you're totally clear.

Partitioning wipes everything off the Drive. smile.gif

Why do you need 9.2 installed on a G4 in order to use Jag?  My "computer gugu" said that when I get my new G5 I will still be able to run classic programs even though it doesn't boot from 9 and it would only have a system 9 system folder.

Kimmer, hard drives aren't that expensive anymore. You could stick a 30GB one in there for around $50. Newegg is a good place to shop..but I'm sure someone here has a better and cheaper.

Only reason I mention another HD is because, even with partitioning, if your hard drive was to go bad, you might lose everything on it. Plus this way you have plenty of space.

dakota,
OS9.2.2 was made for classic...it's optimized for it. You don't need it to run Jag...you need it to run Classic. Well, you don't need it but it's recommended.

Thanks - that is what I have on my G4 presently, but I will make sure once I reinstall, that I launch 9 and upgrade.

Thanks for the picture and yes, I know it'll all be gone. ULP!

JohnK, I'll point Sneakers to this thread and see what he says about another HD. After all, he has an external one, and a PC (ick, nasty) besides. wink.gif

I spent this morning tracking my software registration information. Still need to find a few software CD's to reinstall - but nothing major.

Tomorrow (after I make my Crumbly Baked Peaches) I will work on writing down all my settings for the net and for our hub (which is controlled from my puter!).

Then I'll do the final back up of all docs and early next week - while Sneakers is at work and I have total peace and quiet ... I'll do the whole upgrade thing and sit here and quake in my tennies.  laugh.gif

Y'all really are great, and I feel far more comfortable doing this having all this expert info and encouragment.
