Duckduckgo for Safari
« on: June 25, 2020, 02:40:32 AM »
Hi, folks!

I actually managed to make duckduckgo my default search engine for Firefox. Here's a photo of how I know it's my search engine, because it says so!

I tried to do the same for Safari. When I open Safari, it doesn't say duckduckgo, and I just click on an icon (for my most frequented sites) to take me where I want to go.  I'm also including a screenshot of Safari Preferences that says duckduckgo for my Search engine.  Am I really on duckduckgo on Safari?

Thanks!!!!!

Type a something (Tech Survivors, for example, with the space) in the search field. "Search DuckDuckGo" should appear in the search field.

Hi, Jon,

I did as you suggested and hooray! Duckduckgo showed up on Safari when I typed 'tech survivors' in the search box...with a space between the words! (see attached)

Then, I quit Safari and opened it back up again and clicked on my Amazon icon and it brought me to the Amazon Smile page. Do I just assume it's by way of duckduckgo since I changed it in preferences?

Thanks so much!!

I don't know use specialized site icons, just bookmarks. I can't answer your question, but I don't think that DDG had anything to do with it.

Hi, Jon,

I'm pretty sure I'm not explaining it correctly!  The fault lies with me.  I don't even know if I'm using the correct techy vernacular.

Those site icons are in my bookmark "menu bar" ?  ... I have the clickable "words" across the top when I open Safari, and also see the little icons. I took a screenshot.  Maybe it's a mystery to both of us!?   :dntknw:

As long as you see the "DuckDuckGo Suggestions" list, you know which search engine you are using. I don't even know how to get a list of icons to show in Safari, although I do see that in iOS. Perhaps that is the "Favorites Bar"? If so, that explains the text "clicking on the icon does not indicate duckduckgo.png". :) I had no idea what a duckduckgo.png had to do with anything. :laughhard: I now assume you were talking about clicking the duckduckgo icon in the Favorites list. I would assume that that icon would simply take you to their site. As far as I know, those Favorite icons simply take you to whatever site they represent, they are not links to a search engine. :dntknw:

You answered/posted while I was posting the above. ;)

Not only do I not use the "Favorites" list/bar, I never use any browser's bookmarks list. I have used a completely separate bookmarks manager for well over a decade. It gives me the same list of bookmarks, in any major browser, and negates any need to collect/sync/save/move/etc. them as my browser-of-the-moment changes.

Based on the attached image in another post, you arrived at Amazon smile via a bookmark. Either by clicking the menu bar where it says Amazon, or by clicking the big icon with the A.

The bookmark you would have created. The big icon is from favorites that Safari stores -- but those are based on you and not duckduckgo.
