I don't remember how Safari in Snow Leopard handled cookies. You might try using it to see if it has similar controls/prefs.
Firefox may have similar preferences, try looking for something like "Privacy & Security".
You can avoid Google by using other search engines. Supporting them will help them develop into ever better, less intrusive and more user protective. One of the oldest is
DuckDuckGo, but there are others.
