Plus Sign Under Hard Disk Icon

I've just noticed something strange on my wife's OS 9.2 machine. There's a plus sign underneath the HD icon replacing the words Macintosh HD. We don't know how long the icon has been this way and the machine seems to run fine. Does anyone know what this strange symbol represents? java script:emoticon('')

Someone may have inadvertently highlighted the words "Macintosh HD", which would leave the space available for writing something else,  and then hit the plus sign.  Simply highlight the plus sign and retype Macintosh HD and then click the mouse elsewhere on the screen - that will restore the proper name. It happens!

Jim, It may be that the name of your wife's machine was accidentally changed (I hope. if not, then I too am confused). To check (the computer, not my amount of confusion):

1. Open/launch your System Profiler
2. In the System Profile tab, in the second box from the top entitled “Startup device” is the name of your wife’s machine. If it matches, e.g. it is the +  sign, you may be assured all is well and that it is only a result of an accidental name change.

If you wish to change the name back to the way it was, just double click on the name part HD icon and make the name change as you would with any folder/file.

BTW, you can only make this change if File Sharing is turned off.

Just do a get info on the highlighted disk icon and check the name in the get info box.  If it is a + sign there too then someone changed the name.  But, if it says Macintosh HD (or what the name was), you should run a disk directory utility like (alsofts, apple's disk utility, etc) pronto.
