Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

There is a third. It's known as the UK, where we still use a mix -  we buy fuel in litres but always talk about our vehicles giving miles per gallon (MPG) and speeds in miles per hour.
Most groceries are sold in metric, but we still use "stones" (1stone = 14lb) when weighing ourselves; we still use miles for distance, though the Beeb is trying to convert us to km. Our satnav gives us distances under a mile in feet or yards (3ft) - "in 500 feet, turn left".

To add to the confusion, gallon in the US is different from ours - 3.79 litres US against 4.54 in UK. We used to use 3.79 but it was changed after 1776 and nobody bothered to tell the US 

Medics still give a new baby's weight in pounds and ounces for mothers, but log it officially in grammes.

Our currency went decimal in 1971, taking the place of the old £sd - 20 shillings in the pound and 12 pennies in the shilling. Decimal currency started with pounds, pence, plus a half-penny so we had a coin closer in value to the old (240) penny. The 'ha'penny' was abandoned years ago.

Your post just proves that some people will (and do) read everything!!

I stole that phrase from a YuoTuber in Australia. He is a machinist measuring things in one ten thousandth of an inch. Millimeters are just not small enough!! He has mentioned “bananas” enough that a company has provided him with rulers marked in “bananas”. Apparently, there looks to be 14 bananas in a third of a meter (~1/3 rd of a yard).

Much of our food comes in metric measurements, probably so they can pretend that we are still getting what we used to in each container since most of the people here can't convert to oz and lbs.


The government pretty much gave up trying to make us use kilometers instead of miles.  I remember the highway signs that listed both when they tried to switch back in the 70's, but they eventually disappeared.


But there are some advantages to using our distance units.
