New iPhone?

Are iPhone questions allowed here? If so, I will remove.
Both my wife and I have iPhone 12s with 124 gb. We had a 2 year contract with our ISP. Time to get newer ones. What's the best way to get a new one?
Do we sell ours privately and buy new?
Do we exchange for a credit to buy new?
We do not need the latest model 17. Is it better/cheaper to exchange for a 16?
How do you do your iPhone upgrades?

Only question I can answer is your last one.
I get a new iPhone once the one I have cannot do what I want it to do or every ~8 years, whichever comes first. So far, I've had two a 6 and a 13mini.

Check with your carrier to see if they have any deals. I get frequent email offers of a free iPhone 16 if I sign up for this or that. Most carriers will offer a credit for an old phone though rarely is it much. Wouldn't have a clue how best to try to sell it privately for a decent price. There are places that buy older phones but again don't pay a lot. To me, giving an older phone to a friend, relative or someone who can't afford one is the best way to handle it. Some charities or non-profits might be interested.


The iPhone 16 is a solid model. You won't go wrong with it.

Thanks Krissel. I did sell my previous 2 iPhones privately. One dad wanted a cheap one for his teenage daughter. He paid me 50% of the original price and was happy. So was I, as my ISP only offered me 25% of the original price. I will definitely look for the 2nd latest model (16). I use my iPhone more and more for business. It now holds 24,000 photos which is amazing in itself. The iPhone has taken over from my SLR camera as quality of images are very good.

Those photos really add up. I was amazed to see that my sister had approximately 140,000 (yes, that's correct) photos/videos on her two phones. She had a tendency to take 10 shots when 1 or 2 would have been fine.


However, I recently was helping my niece in trying to backup her phone before transferring to a new one and was gobsmacked to find she has 1.5 T of photos/videos in her iCloud account.      The vast majority of them relate to her child who is now almost 6. Taking pictures of every moment of someone's life may seem necessary at the time but who is ever going to look at all those pics?

I’ll take 10 quick photos while traveling & immediately delete 1/3 of the worse or dupes. And say I will edit ruthlessly later. Yet, that doesn’t seem to happen! Pros & cons of tech!
