I want to upgrade from 9.0.4 to 9.1, but I want to reformat my hard drive first. Once I reformat, will I need a 9.1 disk or can I reinstall 9.0.4 and then do the 9.1 download from Apple?

If I'll need a 9.1 disk, can I get one from Apple for a reduced price since I already have 9.0.4?

George is correct. Install from the 9.0.4 disk, then "do the download".

Pretty painless on DSL; 72M download would be time consuming on dialup.

If you Reformat, everything will be gone.

You might want to get that CDRW to back up important stuff first.

Question: On the download page, it has a column heading labeled "Multi-part" and about 15 clickable numbers underneath. Does that mean the download is in 15 separate parts and you click each number in sequence?

Hey George, I used to have a British penpal and she always used "cos" for "because" like you did. Is that a British thing?

the use of the abreviation 'cos by me sadly points to my not paying attention to what the teacher was saying during English lessons 70 years ago! the clickable numbers you see are i think for downloading to floppy disks.....could be wrong.
I downloaded using DSL.

Anyway, you can download the pieces of 9.1 in any order you want as long as you get them all. I'm on pokey dialup so I opted to do it in pieces over several hours/days.

You can download two or three at a time if you wish, doesn't matter. When they all arrive put them in a single folder. Then when you are ready to upgrade you will double click the first one and it will create a disk image. If I remeber correctly I think I double clicked each in turn to get the respective disk images and put them in a folder. Then by starting with the first image you will go through the normal MAC OS install routine and the first disk image will recognize the others in the folder as it goes along, you don't have to do anything else. Once done you can save the bin files folder or the image files folder for future use. (You may not have to create image files first as these are smi so each might be able to open the next smi file while installing, I created them first just to make the install go smoothly.)
