PCI USB problem
« on: August 13, 2003, 10:24:13 AM »
I'm trying to set up a computer for someone-it's a PowerMac G3 300mhz desktop-and I'm running into some problems.  I'm trying to install a PCI USB card.  The computer recognizes the card, I can see its info in the System profiler, but it doesn't see anything that I plug in.  I've tried all 3 PCI slots.  The card is a Belkin 2 port PCI card, and the computer's running 9.2.  I've checked for software downloads, but it seems that none are necessary.  I know that the card works, because I plugged it into my computer, and it works there.  Does anybody know what I'm missing?

Afraid not, but thanks for trying, anyway.  All of those extensions are loaded, and 9.2 won't let me install USB card Support 1.4.1, because it's innecessary, I guess.  Maybe we Floridians are just out of luck.

Just out of curiosity, what items are you trying to plug into the card?

Card readers need to have the card inserted to be seen, the device won't show up otherwise.

Which card is it? It couldn't by any chance be for USB 2.0 could it? I know they are supposed to be backwards compatible but not all are suitable for older machines. I once bought a 2.0 USB card and installed it into my 9600 only to spend the next several hours trying to bring my mac back to life. In the fine print on the box it said the card was only compatible with factory G4 macs, thank you very much.

This from Apple:

"Important: Mac OS versions 9.1 and later include a later version of this software. Installing USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 over Mac OS 9.1, 9.2 or later could result in the USB adapter card not working.

Important: This software supports only USB cards that comply with the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification and may not work with every USB adapter card. Contact the manufacturer of your USB adapter card if necessary to verify that your card is OHCI-compliant and supported by this software. "

I'm also thinking if you tried to install the 1.4.1 you may have to do a reinstall of 9.1 to get back whatever might have been screwed up in the attempt?

Jennie, in the other thread you said the card reader had to be powered up to be seen by the system? My Lexar is connected to a hub which is externally powered so technically it has power although it doesn't get the green light until the system starts to load , but before the desktop appears.  You might want to try it with an externally powered hub.  Also, as I said in the other thread, the reader needed the mass storage support extension to work.

The card reader is self powered, or whatever the term is, it has only one cord.  Both card readers are like that.

Haven't brought the new one home to try it, but the FlashLInk by Simple TEchnologies works on the iMac 333, 9.1, not on the 6400/G3 400, 9.1.

Mass storage support extension is not present on the iMac.

Greg: I had a Belkin usb card. It worked but it also crashed my computer
(G3 233 OS 9.1 ). I replaced it with another brand and have not had a problem since.

Jen, my card reader is also "self powered", one cord. I do have an Asante 7 port hub which is externally powered. All the USB stuff (mouse, external drives, reader) are plugged into that. My PCI card is a combo CompUSA FW/USB card which oddly enough only works on the USB ports, the FW is faulty. I have a separate FW card now.

All I can suggest is possibly doing a reinstall of 9.1 putting back what might have gone bad and seeing if that helps. Other than that, trying a powered hub may be of help. Or dump the Belkin.
