Trouble with CarbonCopyCloning to Laptop
« on: August 16, 2003, 08:01:32 PM »
I now have OS 10.2.4 on my Ti 500 MHz laptop. Using FW Target mode, the Ti hard driove shows up on my G4 Dual 1 GHz system. I then tried to use Carbon Copy Cloner 2.2  to clone all my G4 "stuff" onto my Ti laptop. But, CCC hung trying to clone .DS_Store (the first item on the CCC list).

My questions are:

1) Was this an abberation and should I try to clone again?

2) Should I have  erased all or part of OS 10.2.4 in the Ti laptop in order to clone from the G4 to the Ti.

3) Should I delete .DS_Store from the CCC list of items to clone?

4) What is DS_Store and what is its function?

5) Are there any other items that should be deleted from the CCC clone list?

5) Is there something else I am doing wrong?

I hope someone can come up with a solution soon as I will shut down the G4 on Monday, 8/18/03. I will then rely on the Ti laptop fro all my computer usage. I probably will not be up and running on the internet until mid-September.

Tahnks for any help,

MamaMoose

Tom. Run Repair Permissions on the Original and Clone first. smile.gif

Clone only the Users Folder.

This note from the creator.

"Some people have experienced problems with cloning to firewire drives:              the clone stops abruptly somewhere in the middle, CCC becomes unresponsive, and the only way to solve the problem is to force quit CCC and/or unplug the firewire cable from the drive. I believe this is due to a more general OS/driver issue with firewire. I will make some changes to CCC to make it more responsive, but there is little I can do to surmount the general firewire issues."

MamaMoose:

If you have the same system on both computers, why not just drag and drop the folders, and not bother with CCC.

4) What is DS_Store and what is its function?

Ans: This file stores the folder and window view preferences and their desktop location.  It's OK to trash it because it will recreate itself.  You'll just lose the preferences, I mentioned above, that are stored in that folder.

Kelly,

I used CCC 2.2 to clone the User file in my Jaguar volume to my Ti laptop. However, half my apps I have in my Jaguar volume did not copy over to the Ti laptop. Also, I waqs trying to replicate the contents of my G4 Jaguar volume but that did not happen.

Further, I am having a very difficult time "ejecting" the Ti laptop volume from my G4 desktop. I get the spinning color wheel for a very long time after which I force quit the G4 finder. I then get an error message that the disk was not put away properly. When i examine disk utilities the Ti powewrbook drive icon is grayed out. I should point out my latop's harddrive has two partitions I acll PB Main and Working. When I enter Firewire Target Disk Mode, I only see PB Main and not the second partition yet disk utilities shows both are present and mounted. Should I be more patient in waiting for my FW TDM icon to eject?

The only way I can get back t a normal state, is to shut down the Ti laptop and then restart the G4.

Question: How does one eject a FW Target Disk Mode icon? Command-E (which does not work for me) or drag icon to trash?

I give up! There seems no way that Carbon Copy Cloner is going to work in cloning from my G4 Dual 1 GHz to my Ti laptop via FireWire Target Disk Mode.  CCC just hangs. I think the creator of CCC has poineted out that CCC does not work well with FireWire drives. Since I am using FireWire Target Disk mode to to get the laptop HD on the big G4 desktop, it sees the Ti laptop as a FW drive.

Also,  I can't get out of FW Disk mode or shut down CCC with Force Quit. When I finally did succeed in getting my Main G4 desktop back, my Ti laptop would not boot! It starts and then brings up a screen in several languages that says:

"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the start key for a few seconds or press the Restart button."

I did the former and after the chime, the same message occurs. I repeated the procedure several times.I then tried resetting the PRAM but after the first chime the smae message abobe appeared. I then booted up holding down the option key and saw the laptops HD  icon but when I selected it, I got a garbled screen.

I next  booted up with my original OS 10.2.0 using the "C" key and then repaired permissions. I could not verify or repair the laptop's hard drive because it said it could not unmount it! This implies when I booted with the install disk, its system did NOT control the laptop. Rather, the laptop's system booted in the presence of the OS 10.2.0 CD.

So now I am stuck. I need to copy all that my Main G4 contains onto my laptop, someway. But given OS X's complexity especially how it stores pieces of apps in various locations, I jsut do not know how to do this and get everything that I need. I tried to CCC just the users folder but that missed a bunch of critical stuff.

Does anyone have any ideas how to do this so I get everything onto the laptop?

Thanks,

MamaMoose

Tom. I don't know much about Firewire Target Mode.  huh.gif

That Restart Message in several Languages is a Kernel Panic.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227

I would Boot the Laptop from the Jaguar CD and run Disk First Aid.

Then run Repair Permissions after it Boots.

If you have managed to copy your Users Folder you should have most of your stuff.

If you still need some Applications I would just Install them on the Laptop.

You might have had better luck doing this over an Ethernet Connection.

I don't know.

Morning, Tom:

I know you'll be glad to know that I have no difficulty CCC-ing the contents of my Pismo (10.2.6) to an external firewire drive . . . actually the smaller OEM drive I replaced in the Pismo a year or so ago.

Never have had a problem.

Wanna try 10.2.6, to see if that makes a difference?

Then it must be some anomaly in the Target Disk process.

Besides, fixin' Permissions, can you run the new DW just to see if that's capable of doing anything for you?

Give me a call. Tortoise and I want to take you to lunch before the big move to Orygun . . . Dublin w/o MamaMoose will just not be Dublin. sad.gif

And what's this "won't be online" stuff.  Won't TS get Trip Reports from your Ti? biggrin.gif

Tom, Hate to send you elsewhere, but Mike Bombich hosts (and moderates) special CCC Fora. Perhaps the help you seek can best be found there. http://forums.bombich.com/

I have used Carbon Copy Cloner over a FireWire connection to a laptop with no trouble.

Never try to CCC your entire desktop drive to your laptop. That will erase the operating system on your laptop and put the desktop's operating system on your laptop. Sure way to clobber the OS on your laptop.

The laptop did not eject because the computer believed CCC was still using it. If you have a program that is working with a disk, then you force-quit that program, you may not be able to eject that disk until you restart thew computer.
