FTP Client software
« on: August 21, 2003, 06:21:03 PM »
Is there a free program available that would allow uploading to a web page without having to use Interarchy (Alchimie) shareware?

Client is the correct word smile.gif

There are tons of FTP programs that will allow you to do this. The two most popular ones are Fetch and Transmit. They both have their pros and cons, I prefer Fetch.

And I prefer Transmit wink.gif It's all about personal preferences. Transmit isn't free..but you can use it without paying.

There are several freeware FTP programs available if you check Versiontracker. I've never used any of them however, as I like Transmit and have used it for quite a while. Also depends on whether you're using OS X or 9 - some are available only for one or the other OS.

If you're using OS X there are a couple of freebies - NcFTP

http://www.ncftp.com/ncftp/

and FTP Thingy and RBrowser Lite (both available at VersionTracker).

For OS 9 - D1FTP seems to be the only freeware available at VT.

You may want to check at Tucows as well.

I use Fetch for all my uploading.

I tried to use Transmit on the free trial basis but my line is so slow it would time out before I could get anything done so I gave up and went back to Fetch.

When it comes to OS X FTP clients, I find Transmit to be the best. One reason is that it will transfer a whole directory, including nested folders several layers deep and all the content. The last time I used Fetch, it wouldn't do that, it would only create the root directory which was empty. I would have to create all the nested folders and transfer the content individually...and manually. Don't know if that's still the case with Fetch.

I've used fetch ever since Dartmouth college made it available. I have never had any problems with it, and regularly upload an entire directory with Fetch (this was an issue in an older version).

However, it's only free for 15 days, but it's well worth the few bucks to register it.

Just my nickels worth.

I've been quite happy with Captain FTP:

I used to Fetch, but the Captain beat it to the punch for OSX and I've stayed with it since.

Hmmm, i used Interarchy and Fetch, and to be honest... Interarchy is (was) worth the shareware price (when i used it, like two years ago).
But these days... i used the build in fetch from Dreamweaver, whitch is just great i think smile.gif
But than offcourse you have to own Dreamweaver wink.gif
