Differences in external firewire drives
« on: August 24, 2003, 02:34:32 PM »
I'm eventually thinking of becoming a mac consultant, so I'll need to be able to connect to as many different Macs as possible. (I'm coming from the pre-press field, so becoming a Mac consultant is a close carry over.)

Currently, I use an older G4 with an external firewire drive; though I have a G5 on order.

What are the differences in the firewire ports (regular, 400, 800) and what would I need to connect to each? I'd like to get by (at least at first) by purchasing as few drives as possible due primarily to space.

Any thoughts?

-Mike

Just buy a 30G iPod...that's sure to work with all firewire Macs. wink.gif

Good luck in your new career!

"Regular" FireWire is FireWire 400; they are one and the same.

FireWire 800 uses a completely diffeent connector. You need a third-party FireWire 800->400 adapter to use your existing hard drive on a FireWire 800 port.
