Quicksilver still not connected
« on: August 26, 2003, 09:19:28 PM »
Some of you are familiar with the internal modem problems I am having with my PowerMac.  I ordered a replacement modem from Mac Res Q and received it today.  Put it in the computer and got the same message.  "No dial tone, check connection".  I am beginning to think the internal telephone cord running to the internal modem is what is bad.  The modem is searching for a connection doesn't get a signal.

At this point I am wanting to take it in and have it tested but there is no one near me that I know of that works on Macs.  The only one I knew of has discontinued Mac support, as they put it.

Mabey I will be forced to purchase an external modem.

I get that error message on occasion when I'm traveling and have changed my Pismo settings from at-home DSL to on-the-road dial-up.

The first thing I check is whether another phone on the circuit is in use, hence (and in actuality) "no" dial tone.

2d: I triple-check the seating of the line cord, both in its wall jack connection and in the port on the Mac.

Awfully simple, I know, but those steps have fixed a lot of what initially appeared to be serious problems

I didn't follow you other thread, but you did try checking that phone jack with a working phone, just to make sure?

Yes. He did. smile.gif

You might have had more than the Modem damaged.

Might be best to return that and try USB External. huh.gif

An external modem is ALWAYS preferable. Two reasons. It can be easily reset, and far more importantly, it has a near infinite life span. Internal modems have no longevity - as they are constantly exposed to excess heat. In my experience, their life span generally is:  0.80 - 2.50 yrs.

Sending it back tomorrow kelly.

I have contacted a Mac retailer north of me.  To far to travel but have been doing some e-mailing back and forth with their main tech guy.  I told him the story, he then suggested booting into OS 9 and giving it a try.  Made no difference.  He seems to believe it could be the internal wire running to the modem also.  He called this the "filter board assembly".   Supposed to give me a price.

The external modem is an option but the less desk clutter the better.  I MAY go that route depending on the cost to fix the internal modem.

The Mac tech guy contacted me with a price on the filter board assembly.  $30 plus shipping.  He will not take it back if it doesn't fix problem.  I am almost sure this is the problem but hate to lose $30 or $40 over it.  How I wish there was a Mac repair shop near me.  Oh well, part of being a Mac user.

Could never make myself pay the money for Applecare Bill. Guess I could of put it to use this time though. Although Applecare is alot more than the $50 I will be paying for the modem

You're right there on the $50 Ryan yet if you flip your hat around, what 'if' there were more problems than just a modem with that storm.?.

Could get lucky on the "$30 plus shipping."
Cross your fingers Ryan.
