Just one uncomplicated question, hopefully...

Does Jaguar have to be cloned to an empty partition or can one be used that has other files and folders on it?

No. It doesn't have to be empty. smile.gif

It will overwrite Folders of the same name though.

Check the Preferences before you use it.

How much are you wanting to Clone? smile.gif

thanx.gif  Kelly!!!  I'd like to clone my X boot partition which is 2.21GB.

I've read and reread the help notes for CCC and get the impression, every time, that the clone has to targeted to an empty partition or the process will wipe out everything that's on it.  I planned to use my FW drive--one of the two partitions that has very little on it and hasn't been written, deleted and rewritten to.  Initially I removed the drive from it's case and installed it temporarily in the tower to format and partition it--then put it all back together again.  Reason for that bit of info is to let you know that it's been formatted, etc., with Drive SetUp, HFS+.  BTW, it's an OWC drive...

Also, what do you mean by 'checking the Prefs'--assume you mean in CCC prior to cloning but are there any specific items/selections I should be aware of???

Thanks a ton, Kelly, and PLEASE let me know if you have any other suggestions--this process makes me a bit uneasy.  unsure.gif

Me. I've always Cloned to an empty Partition. smile.gif

I didn't see anything that says it will erase existing Files.

But after looking and reading I can't promise it won't.

If you can. Move them and move them back later if you want.

Here's their Forum. Not too busy though.

Here's a Review of an older version.

http://www.atpm.com/8.10/cloning.shtml

I've done it a bunch of times.

So far so good. Just follow the directions. smile.gif

I'll give it a try after I check out the sites you made reference to, Kelly.  I'd thought about moving the other stuff out and back in afterwards.  My understanding is that all the 'pieces'/parts of X are 'out in the open' on the cloned partition unless you save to a folder [which doesn't sound like a bad idea] if you don't compress them.  If I can find the 'verbage' regarding the erasing of the existing files, I'll post back.  It's too late tonight for my brain to function... time for  sleep1.gif

Thanks a lot for the pointers, Kelly--it's just so darn easy backing up any of the earlier OSes that I'm spoiled.  laugh.gif

BTW, my artist husband loves the 'hinge'!!   clap.gif

The partition does not need to be empty. Files or folders having the same name as files or folders being cloned will be overwritten. Files or folders having different names will be ignored.

If you're concerned, though, do what I did when I backed up my laptop:

Run Apple Disk Copy. Create a new disk image that's the same size as the amount of files on the volume you are cloning. Put this disk image on the partition you want to clone to.

Tell Carbon Copy Cloner to clone onto the disk image.

Now you have a neat, tidy disk image that contains your entire cloned volume; and no chance of it disturbing anything else on that partition.

thanx.gif  Tacit--I haven't had a chance to work with CCC today but that sounds like a great way to keep the files 'contained'.  Thanks a lot for the suggestion!  Can one boot from a 'disk image' if it becomes necessary?  sunset

No. You cannot boot from a disk image, because a disk image is not a disk. In order to be used, the disk image must first be mounted with a program like Apple Disk Copy--and you can't run any computer programs until you boot your computer. smile.gif

What advantages does Carbon Copy Cloner have over Retrospect's Duplicate option? (besides the price!)

huh.gif  OK... Finally took the time and got the nerve to clone my X boot partition to my Firewire drive-- whew.gif   Am not sure the results were as they should be--here's why?  [Please feel free to comment on any of them!!]

First, I put the few items that were on the target partition in a separate folder and named it 'Original b/u items'.

Then DC'd on CCC and chose the 'Source' and 'Target' disks.  At that point the files to be copied appear on the right.  Herein lies the confusion:  The directions say that one doesn't need to backup a number of files at the root level which include 'etc', 'tmp', 'var', 'automount', 'mach', 'mach.sym' and 'DS_Store', among other.  The only one that showed up on my list was the 'DS_Store', which I deleted.

After the clone, all of the ones mentioned above, with the exception of 'DS_Store', are visible on the Target drive.  I would love to know why, assuming that they're usually invisible and I don't see them on my original drive??  huh.gif

Last question:  In his list of files, as alluded to above, Bombich says, "The 'Volumes', 'Network', and 'dev' directories should also be recreated prior to booting from the cloned drive."  How do you do that and where are they?  It's supposed to be done before booting from the cloned drive--but I didn't...  sweatingbullets.gif  Now what???

oops.gif -- one last issue.  When I booted from the 'clone', my Kensington Orbit didn't function normally, i.e., with it's usual aplomb.  The 'Mouseworks' program was available and seemed to have all the correct settings but it was 'as slow as molasses'.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had experience/success with CCC.  In other words, what did I do wrong???  wacko.gif

I wouldn't be too concerned about what you see/don't see if it works. smile.gif

Be sure to run Repair Permissions fron Disk Utilitty on the Firewire Drive.

You could try trashing and reinstalling the Moseworks Application. smile.gif

thanx.gif  Kelly!  Will run that utility as soon as I respond here.  I run it periodically on the boot partition but didn't think to do it on the FW.  BTW, that drive is fairly new--purchased earlier this year from OWC, formatted  and partitioned with Drive Setup.

Can't remember if "Mouseworks" was part of X or if I installed it--hm-m-m, just checked and I do have it in my downloads stuff so I'll try your solution.  Do I have to be booted from the FW to reinstall that app or will it know where to go, folder-wise, if I'm not???  huh.gif

Appreciate your feedback--I feel better already...  whew.gif  thumbup.gif

Guess I'll have to do that, Kelly...   Installed 'MouseWorks' on the B/U from the X boot drive; at least it went through the install process in a normal fashion, telling me that I'd have to restart to use it, but it isn't there.  Did a 'Find File' and it couldn't.  Thought that was very strange, to say the least...

Permissions have been repaired!

thanx.gif , once again, for your guidance and gentle help.    notworthy.gif
