"Adventures In Losing Control"
« on: September 03, 2003, 12:50:06 PM »
jawdrop.gif Hello Everyone,

While doing some maintenance, Please see RHPConsult topic Mysterious from Aug 29th, I lost my pop up Control
Panel. I could not do another thing as the Mac couldn't function without them.

I had to do a clean reinstall of OS 8.5 and OS 8.6 Update. I lost all my Internet Settings and information.

Now, I Cannot Get TCP/IP with the Ethernet Option. I keep getting an old version MacIP and PPP options; and I don't know how to get the newer option back.

The Cox "Mac Tech" was here to try to set up the connection but he said it was definately a Mac problem. He told me that it looked like I needed to get my hard drive reformatted and installed with the OS 8.5 and OS 8.6. He said that it looked like my system was "corrupted."

I have since searched high and low to try to find a Mac repair place.
There are listings for PC repair but I don't see too many listed for Mac. I have asked everyone I know but I came up dry.
I have no idea what to do now.

I have lost all my internet connections and am now back to using my WebTV/MSN.

My Cox modem connection is still there and is open. If I can get the TCP/IP to read Ethernet I can get back up and running. Cox does not supply ANY information but what is on the CD, which will not work unless I have that TCP/IP Ethernet option to link into. I have no IP Address,Subnet Mask, or any of the information for use with the Internet Set-Up Assistant.

If anyone has an idea of where this important little tidbit is hiding, please let me know.

I am desperate. wallbash.gif

Thank you,
MrsLop

MrsLop:

Look for a free program called Internet Config and or MacPPP these programs are control panels that store and serve the Internet and modem connection settings, as well as other related settings to your system and applications that need them.  Once installed, whenever a communication type program or the system, needs these settings it looks for them first in these control panels.  Usually the default settings are all you need.

Good Luck

MrsLop -

A couple of questions.

1. You said you did a clean install. Was it customized in any way?

2. You tried to set the TCP/IP control panel to Connect Via "Ethernet" and Obtain IP Address "Manually." Did you ever have Ethernet as an option since the reinstall?

If you don't have the Ethernet option in the TCP/IP control panel, I'd probably check the Extensions Manager for the existence of "Apple Enet" extension.

If it's not there, bingo. Enable it and restart and open the TCP/IP.

Honestly, if your Cable hookup is at all like many of the others, I wouldn't worry  about the IP scheme. You're likely going to run DHCP anyway.

Hope that helps. Take care.

Hello Mrs. Lop,

First of all you don't need to find a Mac repair shop. The clean install or reinstall of 8.5 and 8.6 update was what the phone tech was referring to when he said the system was corrupted. By replacing the system with the reinstall you took care of that problem.

Now, did you do a "clean install" or just a reinstall over the existing system folder. If indeed you did a "clean install" you should have something called "Previous system folder" on the drive somewhere. It will have all the old preferences from the earlier system including the internet settings.

If you find it, open the Preferences folder and look for the TCP/IP prefs and the Internet Prefs files. These can be dragged over to the new Preferences folder on the new system and copied. You will get a popup message that says you already have such and such a file and do you want to replace them with the ones you are about to add. Yes, you do.

Now look in the new system folder/control panel folder and see if there is a TCP/IP control panel. If so, double click it and see if it opens. At the top of the window there should be a "connect via" button which you can click on to select the Ethernet connection.
If there is no TCP/IP control panel, drag the one over from the Previous system folder to the new Control Panels folder. You will have to restart the computer for the system to recognize the addition to that folder. Then see if you can select Ethernet from the TCP/IP panel.

Come back and let us know what happened.

Mrs Lop. Your Mac isn't recognizing the Ethernet card. Remember the Driver I sent you via email?

Hello All,

Whoa, slow way, way down.
Remember, who you're dealing with here. I have a Chemotherapy related memory problem, as well s being new to all things Mac and computer related.

It took me a long time to gather the information just to post this topic.

This is what happened.
I had made pop-up tabs for the following:
Systems Folder, Extensons, Control Panel and Preferences.
I was doing a maintenance drill which including trashing some preferences, then using  Disk Warrior and finally using Tech Tool Lite, I was talked through this whole procedure via telephone.  At some time during the Tech Tool procedure, I lost my Control Panels. When I couldn't find the Control Panel and couldn't get the Mac to respond, I had to start up using the CD from OS 8.5. From there I did a Clean install Recommended Installation.
followed by a Install of OS 8.6. I didn't know how or what to install from the other features (CD Extras and etc..). It still doesn't make sense to me and at that time, I was on my own and not getting directions from anyone on the telephone.

After I completed the installs, I went back to find that my TCP/IP settings were different. There was an "Alert" that told me that Ethernet was no longer available and that it had been changed to MacIP.

I have looked through the previous Systems Folder, but with the old Control Panel missing and Tech Tool Zapping the PRAM before the clean install, the settings weren't available to the Clean System Folder to use.

I hope that I am making sense to you, but it is the only explanation that I have. I will answer your replies individually.

Thank you for your patience with me.

MrsLop, I don't remember 8.6 very well, but...

1. Open your TCP/IP Control Panel
2. At the top-left of the TCP/IP window is a drop down menu that says "Connect Via..." In this area select "Ethernet-built in" (or similar wording).
3. You may be asked if it is OK to make this change. Click OK or agree, and then restart.

Any help?

Leo,

I don't understand. The "old" System HAD Ethernet as an option. My problem is that I can't get that particular setting back.

Can you be more specific about what you meant concerning the PPP and any other information I might need to get Ethernet back?

Thank you

cdub,

You are why ahead of me on this.

I did not do a Custom Install, initially. I did a Clean Install Recommended.

The Extension you are referring to, Apple Enet is not showing up ANYWHERE. So, how can I enable something, if it is not there? Where is this Extension to be found?

What is meant by "since I am going to use DHCP...?
Please elaborate on this.

Thank You,
MrsLop

Hello krissel,

I got nowhere. The TCP/IP
and all that went with it were connected to the Control Panels.

I couldn't find anything that pertained to this with a date PRIOR to the Tech Tool Lite fiasco.

I have searched for this information. It has taken me days to figure out that it just doesn't exist anywhere that I have looked.

Thank you for the information. If I ever get this problem solved, I hope to be able to use it.

Hello Bernie,

Yes, I do remember the Driver Information you sent me. The problem is,
it is stuck back here on my WebTV and it is not on my Mac. I can't do anything like email or Internet on the 4400, so I can't send it to the 4400.

How I wish you were here.

Thanks,
MrsLop

Hello Harv,

If it weren't for the CD's you sent me, I wouldn't have been able to get the Mac up and running. Thank you so much, you are a life saver.

Unfortunately, I guess I just do not understand the options that could get me to the Connect via or I am missing something.

The quandry is, Connect via Ethernet is not showing up as an option AT ALL. What I see for options are MacIP and PPP. Period end of story.

Thank you though, I really do appreciate your help.

OK,now I am getting system crashes and freezes when I try to select TCP/IP.

None of my keyboard force quit worked and I had to push the off button to shut the Mac off.

This is getting really scary for me, now.

I now (finally) understand the issue-- there is no there, there. Indeed  it makes it most difficult to enable Ethernet, when it cannot be selected as a TCP option.

Sorry my help wasn't.

The only thing I can think of is. A TS member  may have a Spare Hard Drive to send you with the OS already installed.  You then simply unscrew the case on your 4400 lift it off and you'll see your Hard disk on the Side of your Mac. ( Yes! on the Side of the 4400) Simply unplug the old and replace the new the same way. Close up the Mac . Reconnect all cables and Fire it up.  Your' good to go. ( Always go into the Startup disk control panel and Hightlight your new Disk)  All I have as far as HDD's are  1.2 gigs left. Your's is a 4 gig. Anyone here got a spare HD with 8.6 already loaded  for Mrs. Lop?? This is the easy way smile.gif whistling.gif
