My favorite singer (image)
« on: September 03, 2003, 05:12:33 PM »

Went to see my all time fave over the weekend, just thought I'd share this image.

For the camera geeks among us:

Shot at ISO 1250 in RAW format. The prints from this file (39 megs) looks better by far than any stage lighting shots I have ever done on any film--and that covers the gamut, trust me. Nikon D100.
Plus, by shooting RAW, I can adjust the color & exposure after the fact, which is very handy when shooting concert lighting, which changes abruptly. Although this shot is pretty much as shot.

Incredible shots Thomas! As one who use to shoot a LOT of concerts, I know how difficult it can be - those are great photos!

BTW - how close were you? (ie: what lens etc.?) Did you have a press pass by any chance? When I was shooting concerts (for the University of Toronto independent paper "The Newspaper" and just for fun) cameras were still usually allowed at concerts. Those days are pretty much over as artists and their management try to control every aspect of merchandising etc. One of the projects on my "to do" list is to scan & play with some of my old B&W's - I have some pretty good photos of the Police, XTC, Siouxsie, Iggy Pop, John Otway, Captain Beefheart etc...

Great shooting. smile.gif

I was considering the D100 for it's "relative" low price compared to the other Nikon SLRs, but your images are pushing me over the edge... biggrin.gif

Could you mention any pros and cons for this camera?

Many artists have taken the fun out of concert coverage by demanding that photogs sign outrageous contracts and/or limiting you to shooting just a couple of songs at the beginning.
In this case I attended a casual Blues Festival which only had fewer than 400-500 people in attendance. Walking up to the edge of the stage was encouraged.

I shot with an ancient 180mm f2.8 lens, which becomes ~270mm when used on a digital camera. This lens is about 30 years old, but very sharp and has had some custom modifications for use on my digital cameras. (Interesting that the EXIF data in the image files says that the pix were shot with a 300mm).

I use Nikon D1x's & the D100. I think the D100 is a great value, although not nearly as sturdy as the D1x for hardcore use.
The D100 is actually better than the D1x in some respects:  Much longer battery life, lower noise in long exposures & high ISO's, quieter shutter. It's also lighter, although I prefer heavier camera for slow shutter speed shooting.

I do find the controls on the D100 more ackward for fast-paced shooting. It can only have one preset, custom white balance setting, while the D1x offers three at a time. If you shoot RAW, which I suggest, the compressed setting on the D100 takes entirely too long to write the file.

As with any high-end digital camera, you have to take the time to learn the myriad controls and fine-tune the camera for your purposes. You can't expect to just take it out of the box & start shooting.

Shooting a performer under rapidly changing, hot stage lights (especially a Person of Color wearing white) is a challenge. One of the reasons I wanted to show off these images is that I have never achieved such high-quality results using film under these conditions. I wish you could see the prints.

The other reason is that I want more people to listen to Mavis Staples.

You folks shouldn't get me started talking f-stops, I tend to go on & on.

Thanks for the info Thomas, what about storing the 'raw' images? What are you using, and how many images can you store in raw format on that size media? Do you think a 1G Microdrive would be worth it?

RAW files (NEFs in Nikon's world) consume a huge amount of space. You have to think of them as the equivalent of film negatives. You generally have to save them in some other format to use them online or to send to clients.

In the case of the Mavis images, each NEF I shot is about 9.5 megs, but when I save them as TIFs they are ~33 megs each.

I have had single day assignments during which I have created 4 gigs worth of pixels--and I'm not an exhorbitant shooter.

These days I primarily use external Firewire drives to store my files. CDs just don't hold enough, take too long to write & have some reliability questions.  I like having files & copies of files on external drives since they are easy to find, work with, alter, copy, rename, etc.

And, as somebody told me, of all the storage formats that have come along so far (think floppy, ZIPs, CDs, etc.), Hard Drives have consistently been there. And they are not that expensive these days.

I know some shooters who are using DVDs, but I'm not there yet.

I primarily shoot with 512 MB flash cards. Never have used a Microdrive because of stories which I hear about how vulnerable they are to damage from hard knocks or dropping them. A 512 card hold about 65 RAW files on my D1X.

I stocked up on 512's a while back, before the larger size cards were readily avialable. When I do purchase again, I may get larger cards, but I worry about too many eggs in one basket.

Thanks again for the info...

I'll be saving my pennies, I could handle price of the body, but the lenses...oh, the lenses!  eek2.gif

Just for comparison, here's an image shot on the same stage that evening, but a JPG shot at ISO 800 using the D1x.

It's hard to tell online, but this image doesn't have near the smoothness of the RAW files. To me it looks like high-speed color neg.

And when you consider that the RAW file lets me control exposure, color balance, contrast, even size after the shooting, there is just no doubt about the way to shoot these kinds of situations.

kps, I use a lot of older Nikon lens on these cameras, so why not just pick up some used basic lens?
