printing from Classic environment?
« on: September 04, 2003, 01:17:51 PM »
While booted in OSX, is it possible to print from a Classic program (Filemaker Pro)?  How would I go installing my Canon Printer driver into Classic?  I guess I'd have to boot into Classic first, or can I install it from OSX?

I know that there was printing from classic problems with systems prior to 10.2, but now in 10.2.6 you should have no such problems, unless your Canon printer is so old that it isn't supported by OS X's drivers.  Add the printer to OS X's Print Center's list and make it the default. You should be able to print from your program in classic mode.  Classic uses the OS X printer output capabilities.

Classic has a "system folder" pretty much the same as a stand-a-lone OS 9 folder.

Printer drivers go in the extensions folder. Printer preferences may go in their own named folder (or loose) in the preferences folder.

Those files should not go in your "X" folder.

If you don't feel comfortable about moving files manually, then don't do it!

Most likely you can find the drivers you need at Cannon's website, which should have OSX installers, which will also set you up in Classic.

Good Luck!

Yes. Just Boot into OS 9.x and Install their OS 9.x Drivers. smile.gif

I'm roadwarrior-ing this week for the first time with my portable Canon printer. I had installed the drivers for X before leaving home, but discovered later that I needed  to print via a "Classic" app, too. So I did exactly as Kelly et al suggested. The CD with the i70 carried both sets of drivers.

FWIW, and because I have 9.2 on a separate partition, booting into it directly seemed to be the safest way to assure that both the X drivers and the 9x drivers "stayed in their proper place".

The instructions for the i70 prescribed that it "would not print" in Classic. That, fortunately, does not mean it will not print in 9x, when the trusty Pismo (with two separate sets of drivers appropriately installed) is booted via 9x . . . at least that's how it's working out.
