I would suggest a 30 gig. I like the Maxtor 7200.

I even installed a 40Gb drive in this iMac, piece of cake biggrin.gif
If you are able to, i would recommend a Western Digital, as it's muchhhhhh more silent than the original Maxtor i had.
If you are thinking of installing OsX.2, than i would also suggest taking notice of enough Ram memory.
At least 256Mb but 512 is certainly a must (on slower machines).

Too late Mrious I have just returned from 'puter fair clutching 30gig Maxtor 7200 and having done that my next 'newbie' question is  to get the HDD into usable condition do I initialise and SINGLE  partition it using Drive setup on OS 9.2.2 ?
If this is so can I then install OS X 10.2 plus Classic on the newly formatted drive?
George.

Hello smile.gif

Don't worry, the 7200 rpm Maxtor is probably more silent than the original 5400 rpm disk you have in there now wink.gif
You shouldn't find any problems installing OsX and Os9 on that drive after whiping it with the Os9.2.9 Disk Utility.
Just make sure you put the divers on that disk for Mac Extended (i think it was called).
The best thing is, install the drive (watch the jumpers settings) in the second bay from your G3, than insert an OsX CD and boot from CD.
Than whipe the new drive, and use the Disk Utility from OsX... this way you can't do anything wrong.

Others might have other suggestions smile.gif
Good luck smile.gif

formatted the Maxtor and was having exactly the same problems as Kbeartx in identifying the partition where OS X was to be installed on beige G3. Am now beyond that stage and the problem now is that Jag installer continually stops at no particular spot during 'processing essential system software' any ideas as to what might be the problem?

From the links in KBear's Thread. smile.gif

"You can only boot OS X from a "master" drive in the beige G3. This applies to hard drives and CD-ROM drives. If the CD-ROM is set to slave, you will not be able to install OS X. If the hard drive is set to slave, you will not be able to boot from it.

Non-Apple upgrades and peripherals (such as unsupported USB devices, replacement drives, and third-party memory) may cause problems when installing or booting into Mac OS X."

http://new.lowendmac.com/ppc/g3b.shtml

Try to make it as much like the original machine as possible. Pull any added stuff.

Wait for KBear to reply? smile.gif

Thanks Kelly, will follow your advice regarding the removal of non-Applehardware and then see what Kbear has to say.

removed from beige G3 new Maxtor HDD that would not accept OS X installation, installed the Maxtor in my G4, reformatted it (single partition) and installed OS X no problem.
Then reinstalled the Maxtor back into G3, sadly it is not recognised except that it is registers in  system profile when using OS 9.2.2. Heeeeelp!

George,

I wish I had some advice to help you.

I have a Beige G3 but I never installed OS X or 10.2 on it.

Maybe kbear will have some more suggestions.

Good luck getting it installed. smile.gif

I can only find this, and i'm not sure if it helps:

Better wait till others have something more to say George.
Or start a new topic smile.gif

Hi George,

Partition the drive, it will make for ease of pain.

Try this partition sceme.

7.5GB 1st partition for OS 10.2 install, or make it even smaller if you like, but not larger.
2.5GB 2nd partition for OS 9 install
10 GB for programs
10GB for documents

The last two are preference, it really is up to you how big or small you want those two.

You will not need any other special software like X-Post Factor or such to install Jaguar on a Beige.

There is no firmware upgrade for the Beige G3 to install OS X.  The firmware upgrade mentioned by Marcel is for the Blue and White G3.

You can not install Jaguar on the drive on another computer (your G4) and then run it from your beige, it (OS X installer) will configure OS X system for that specific computer and it's hardware.

Make sure you have the drives jumper settings at Master, not master/single or slave.  What model Maxtor hard drive do you have?  On their web site you should be able to find the schematics for the jumper setting, but it should have come with the drive too.
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/products/...sktop/index.htm

Good luck.
