using a system 9 partion for X
« on: September 07, 2003, 07:00:40 AM »
Hi:I sometimes use a G3 laptop which is partitioned for system 9 and system 10.  I am using system X more and more and system 9 less and less.  I do not want to buy another hard drive at present nor re:partition at present.  Is it possible to put applications or other data on the system 9 partition and still use it for system X?  Thank you. ilw-00

It's absolutely OK to put data or programs on your OS 9 partition and use them from OS X.  I do this all the time.  The reverse is true too.  I have two volumes (actually 2 drives) one called Aqua the other called Classic.  I keep my Final Cut Pro Document folders on tthe Classic volume and run FCP from OS X.  You can even keep aliases of those docs or programs that are on the OS 9 sides in your OS X dock or favorites folder.  I have some OS 9 aliases for games, that are on the other drive, in my OS X dock, and I play them in classic mode all the time.  If the application is a carbon app, then it can be called from and run from in either system.

I, too, have X and 9.2 on separate Pismo partitions (with docs on a 3d - to ease back-ups). I can see no reason why you couldn't put docs anywhere you find it to be convenient.

My experience has been that operations "across boundaries" are smooth and, essentially, seamless. Open a doc and the appropriate app is available.

I did something - - for the first time last week - - by installing on those separate partitions the respective X and 9.2 drivers required by Canon's new portable printer . Both, it seems are needed, depending upon the particular application used in printing. Selection was, also, seamless.

IMO. It's best to leave the Original OS X Applications where they are. smile.gif

Other than that. It doesn't matter. smile.gif
