I have a G3 WallStreet , 288 Mb RAM, 20 Gb internal HD.

I have installed a USB PC card, which works well with a 2 Gb external hard drive so long as I simply run programs or access files from the external HD.

I installed OS 9.2.1 from a legal Apple original CD onto said external HD, but I cannot start up from it.

Then I tried the same thing with a Fujitsu MO drive, and cannot start up from the external MO.

I have one MO removable disk with OS 9.1 on it, and I can start up from that one.

How can I get my WallStreet to start up in 9.2.1 from these external drives? I have "blessed" the system folders, and have selected them in the "Startup Disk" control panel. What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure it works, since you don't have built-in USB. Maybe it might work if you have all the right extensions for the USB card in the external system folder. But I wouldn't hold my breath since it's not a built-in system.

Thanks, Petra. I suspected it had something to do with my USB not being built in, since the USB is nearly the last thing to load when starting up from the internal drive.

HOWEVER, my MO removable drive is SCSI. I have one disk I can start up from in OS 9.1, but I cannot start up from a newly-installed OS 9.2.1.

I'm puzzled.

Just reitterating what Petra said about the USB. No, you can't start up from USB or Firewire externals cause the PC card loads after the system is chosen. If the driver at the Fujitsu site doesn't help give the old Command+Option+Shift+Delete a try to select a different SCSI system on startup.

A fellow named Ryan Rempel has created software that allows older Macs to run X and is in the process of working on a way to make use of external Firewire devices to boot older Macs. If he manages this trick it should open the door to creating means of USB and FW startup on machines like the Wallstreet. I'm keeping my eye on its development and hoping he can do it.

The updated driver did the trick! Thanks to all, especially Kelly.

I am running from the external SCSI Fujitsu MO right now, just to test everything. It is a little slow, but will do what I need. I'm a happy camper!
