Firewall Alerts
« on: September 15, 2003, 03:33:07 PM »
I am connected to ISP by DSL. I have NetBarrier X 10.1 installed as firewall. I have received a number of alerts from NetBarrier in past week while connected indicating that "Vandal" was attempting "Ping Flood" in one case and "Port Scans" in other alerts. The IP address of each attempt is recorded and I added the intruders to the NetBarrer Stop List. All of the attempted intrusions came from different IP address.

My question: is there anywhere to report these attempts? Or are the IP addresses phony in any case?

rongold:

Ask yourself these questions:

Can I bounce back spam or porn to the sender?

Can I stop people or computer bots from pinging me?

The Ip addresses are real, but most likely represent either anonymizing prozy servers, or compromised (virus-infected) PCs. Only an idiot tries to hack from his own system.

You can use a resource like SpamCop to track down the ISP that owns the IP address. Type

http://theIPaddress (example: http://123.234.12.123)

into the SpamCop window.
