Kelly . . . help, please . . . monitor shopping
« Reply #15 on: February 20, 2003, 12:20:00 AM »
And the beat goes on........

Despite the bad/stupid/misinformed advice from both the Apple Store and CompUSA, I made a second visit today to fool with resolutions, checking various font sizes.

The decision has been made. It's the 20. Truly gorgeous!

But, our/her G4 tower has only a ATV Rage 128 Pro card as OEM which must be replaced by a Radeon 8500, according to the Knowledge Base, to accommodate the 20".

I've ignored a lot of prior TS threads on such topics in the past, unaware that someday they might have some personal relevance. Now I need to find out what to get and where to get it.

So its off to more on-line shopping. Any ideas on which direction to march?

Thanks, again, Kelly.

I got in touch w/ATI (Toronto) yesterday . . . 'twas a somewhat confusing website, but very pleasant and informative folks on the phone.

What I need, according to Tech Support, is the (latest and greatest) Radeon 9000 card. More power for less $, I'm told.  That sounded like a good plan.

So, I just called MacZone and it's (20" and Radeon 9000) d-o-n-e. Thanks to everyone for their advice, counsel and URLs

Gonna be delivered after I get back from trip next week, so a "Consumer's  Report" from the recipient of this gift will be a bit delayed.

Yes, I think I'm going to go for the 20" ... I'm now up to my eyeballs in opinions, and the consensus seems to be the 20" as a good all-round better deal ... some have even suggested two displays (17" and 20"), for the price of one 23", although I have no need for TWO displays (of course, the wheels are spinning, and I find myself creating the NEED for two displays).    lol.

Richard:

When I finally was able to try different resolutions, it "solved" the concerns I had about  how my spouse's favorite fonts would be viewed. A key concern, since I believe our eyes are a bit more . . . uhmmmm . . . mature, than yours may be?

When I came home and looked carefully at her old 19" Radius, I was amazed at the difference I'm sure she will see. . . and enjoy.

LOL! I'll try and keep that in mind as I try and dig myself out from under this pneumonia I've had for the last week ... nothing like illness to make one feel mortal!

Cool Dick.

I suggested you might try the 9000 Pro.

http://www.techsurvivors.net/cgi-bin/ultim...ic;f=1;t=010282

If you're running Jaguar on that machine you might try this Radeon Demo.

Pretty amazing stuff.

I saw one of the new 20" screens the other day along side a 23".
For the money difference I'd get the 20 incher without hesitation because they both looked great.

I've always thought the 23" was bit on the overkill anyways,like the 17" screen on the new powerbooks.
If you're going to get a big screen,why stop at the half-half point with the 23"? Go and pick up one of those ((BIG)) monster size screens then.

With the 17" powerbooks. The whole point intended for laptops/powerbooks etc was portable. The 17" blow that way out of the saddle!

RHP. Which Sawtooth is it?

Seems to be a problem with some of them,

"No display using ADC connector on RADEON 9000 PRO MAC EDITION"

http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4123.html

The following early G4 PowerMac® models featured an AGP slot, but did NOT include the extra power connection required for ADC (they are NOT ADC Enabled):

*   M6921
*   M7232
*   M7824
*   M7825
*   M7827

Uh oh . . . thanks Kelly for the "oversight".

I'm not home at the moment (attended the "monthly meeting" of TS' Hawaii Caucus this morning),      . Accordingly, I won't be able to check the model number, sotto voce, until I get home tomorrow night.

The surprise is still scheduled for next Monday.

I really  very much appreciate your looking out for me

No problem Richsrd.

The affected Models seem to be what they call Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics)

Pretty much a Sawtooth. 350, 400, 450

I too am looking to buy the 20 inch display from Apple.  Will I have to upgrade my video card?  I know I will have to get a DVI to ACD adaptor, I can do that...  However I don't think I will be able to afford the RADEON 9000.  Do I really need to get it?

This is what my machine has now: 350 mhz processor, AGP Graphics, ATY Rage 128 Pro, 16 mb card (video) memory.

I hope I am understanding this whole thread correctly.

Jay. First. Do you have a DVI Port on that Card?

Notes

1. The Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) may contain a card with a VGA port only or both a VGA port and a DVI port.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418

Second. Yes you will need one of these. This is a little cheaper.

http://dealmac.com/articles/47413.html

Third. I don't know that this will work. Just probably.

You'll need to ask when you buy. Or not.
