If ya hear any thumps Gary S, it could be that dummy fan interfering with the flyball getting clobbered by other fans. biggrin.gif

I couldn't believe what happened last night. And did anybody have any doubt that the Cubs were in trouble last night when that dope  decided to get in the way???

Gary, Gregg, Russ--I really do feel your pain. I'm from Philadelphia.  wacko.gif

Yeah, Rob. Thanks. It really does hurt. I couldn't do anything for awhile but sit there and stare. At first I was mad at that fan, then concerned about him; not his physical safety, security took care of that, but his psyche. I've been to countless games, and never have caught a ball. Isn't that what every fan wants to do sometime?

But, it was the turning point in the game. Alou had it. It would have been the second out. One more, and the inning is over, most likely with the Cubs still leading. No wild pitch and walk on the very next pitch. Less tension for Prior to work through. Game over. Cubs win, and move on. I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Tonight, the Cubs will win. That fan will have a potential lifetime burden lifted from his shoulders. He's 26 years old, with alot of living ahead of him. The Cubs have to rally for this guy, to keep him from becoming suicidal! It has to be a Cubs win now.

I think they're going to crucify the fan in center field before the game (before the National Anthem). wink.gif

That error by Gonzo at shortstop didn't help either.

That's how baseball is though. That's why I've always liked it so much. One turn of the screw and things can fall apart pretty darn fast.

One thing I've learned is that until that last out....anything can happen.

I sure hope Woods can pitch a solid game tonight and the Cubs can win the ball game.

If they lose, it will be wait until next year, like it's been all my life as a Cubs fan....so...

I want a win, but if they lose.........I'll be a mess. sweatingbullets.gif

But Gary, if Alou catches that ball, there are two outs.
The batter is gone instead of drawing a WP walk.
Rodriquez singles, and Pierre (still at second) scores.
Next batter hits grounder to short. Slow catcher on first, who cares how fast the batter is. No need to rush to get two, can't bank the 4th one for the next inning. Gonzo takes his time, flips to second, inning over. Cubs still lead 3-1, and probably go on to win the game.
Tonight is it. Cubs win big.

Gregg,

God, you've got a good memory. biggrin.gif

I hope your right for sure.

I'm glad I put that $5000 on the Cubs to win the World Series this Spring in Vegas. At 70 to 1 odds ....well...$305,000 maybe I'll be able to buy a few G5s. wink.gif

Cubs Lost

I'm a little sad but like us Cubs fans say....We'll get them next year.

The odds were against it going into Chicago up 3-2 and having Prior and Woods pitching (they didn't lose back to back games all year) but..........at least now I don't have to listen to those irritating FOX broadcasters that can't stay silent for 2 seconds.wink.gif

 wallbash.gif

I forgot to mention—the Marlins played 2 great games in Chicago to finish off the Cubs. They simply played better. They deserve going to play in the World Series. My hat goes off to them.

One question. Why did Baker put in Dave Veres in relief? huh.gif

Man, Gary, that's a tough series.

Since I work at night, I couldn't follow the last two games closely, but took a look every once in a while at the Webcast at espn.com.

I taped both games, so when I got home last night, I took a look at the fan and the foul ball footage.  I still haven't quite decided what I think about it.  It was one of the most unfortunate plays I've ever seen.

The fact is, when a ball is hit, everyone looks at the ball, so that's what they were doing.  Sure, if they had really been alert, they should have glanced at the players to see if anyone was coming over to try for it.  If a foul ball is coming down in the first row, the fans should always allow for the chance that a player might be there to catch it.  But even the players themselves sometimes collide, and they're on the same level.  If those seats had been at ground level, I bet the fans would have leaned back to let Moises catch it.  But being up higher like they were, it looked like they didn't even know he was there.  What a sad moment.  And talk about a turning point.  Man.  And I do feel sorry for that kid.  He may have to move to Florida.

On the other hand, you have to give the Marlins credit for playing great baseball.  They just kept coming back in so many games and wouldn't give up.  They're a gutsy team and I admire the way they played.  They took advantage of things when they needed to.  A great team.  But it took a little luck, too (it usually does).

I think many, many people across the country were behind the Cubs.  It looks like the team is stronger than it's been in a long time.  Let's hope they'll be contenders for a few years now.

But it still hurts.   verysad.gif

Russ, yep. Hurt.gif  verysad.gif  wallbash.gif

Hoilday Inn has offered the most distraught Cub fan of all a three month stay in Florida. How would he pay his bills though. He works for a national accounting company. I guess he'll have to transfer for awhile.... maybe til this time next year when the Cubs will win it all!

Russ,

I think your absolutely right in all your comments.

We forget, the Marlins not only beat the Cubs they beat the Giants also. they did it with good hitting and fair pitching, except for Becket who piched a great series, and some luck. They managed to do what they had too to win.

I'm pulling for Boston now against the Yanks. I think it will be a good World Series anyways.

Maybe next year for the Cubbies. At least they got some experience.....I hope they can keep the team together and pick up a few new players.

Well, our final hope for a storybook World Series got squashed.  We all got two stiff doses of reality this year.  It's eerie how both deciding games were so similar.

As much as I dislike the Yankees, they most always find a way to win the big games.  True, they can buy just about anyone they want, but I still give them credit for coming through when it counts.

There's one guy on their team who always seems to do well when I see him play.  I never hear him mentioned much, but I've seen him get clutch hits in many big spots:  Jorge Posada.  I don't know much about him except that he hits well when I'm watching.

It's hard to get excited about watching the World Series, but I would like to see the Yanks get their butts kicked.  So about all I can say is, Go Marlins, even though they beat the Cubs.  They really made the most of their season.

Hey Gary, it's even more disappointing that the Cubs didn't win when you mentioned your bet!  Wow, what a payday that would have been.  Back in the late '80s when the Twins won the World Series, there was a lawyer at my firm who had put a bet on them before the season.  I think the odds were something like 35 to 1.  He wagered something like $1,000, so he made about $35,000.  But your odds top them all.  Sorry you didn't make it.
