Hello,

Just signed up

Wonder if anyone can help before I part with any money?

I have an iBook that I want to network with my Performa 5260 [with PDS ethernet card]. Do I need an ethernet router or simply a [cheaper] ethernet hub? I ask this because I've read that in Jag, by turning on Internet Sharing, it does away with the need for a router.

I want to be able to share files and share the Internet between the two computers.

Your advice eagerly awaited

I use an Airport to file share between a DP 800 and PB G3, but have never internet shared. So I too am eager to learn the answer. There is indeed an option in Jag for internet sharing, but I do not know the extent to which each machine must use Jag. No doubt someone will soon drop by to resolve this issue. BTW, what OSs are you using on your iBook and Performa?

Several of your countrymen are active participants of this place and are a most engaging and delightful lot.

I love this about the Mac community - so many people ready to help out.

Had a look at the 3 Macs ... site and it could prove v helpful for what I want to do.

I suppose I could risk buying a hub on a 'work or return' basis with a view to using the Jag Internet sharing option to start with.

Mac support in the UK is pretty limited compared to the US though certainly better than it was although we don't have nearly the number of retail outlets there are in the US - one of the biggest computer outlets, PC World, reluctantly has a Mac section: their iMac is running osX 10.1 and the software section [one rack] had a couple of pieces of utility software on display and some misfiled PC ones

C'est la vie. I do my bit to spread mac advocacy at every opportunity!

As to the OS's I'm using: OSX 10.2.1 on my iBook and OS9.1 on the Performa. They quite happily network directly using a simple crossover cable connection.

Maybe someone who has tried the jag Internet sharing option will drop by as you suggest.

Do yourself a favor and get a Router. This way you can File Share and share the internet very easy. Better than using Internet sharing on an OS X machine to share with an OS 9 machine, plus the older machine will be able to use the internet without the iBook being turned on. You can get a Links router for less than $50.00 here;

There are some more theads dealing with this too. You can do a seach for routers on the right upper side of the TS page.

I personally ended up getting a D-Link router and an Ethernet Cat5 cable and connected my G4, running OSX.2.6 and my G3, running OS9.1 together with the ethernet cable. The computers are in separate rooms so I ran the cable down in my basement and up through the floor to each computer. It works well with the router. It has a built-in firewall. I can share files and the Internet(Cable). Works great.

I don't know how mobile you are with your iBook. If you are moving around with it then it may pay to go wireless.

In your case, I agree with getting a router.

I use airport myself for file sharing between 'puters.
Did use (or still can) use ethernet between them.
Internet sharing: normally use my two cans and a string dial up for the towers.
Airport for the powerbook.
Suppose I could use airport with any of them considering I've the airport extreme that has a built in modem.
Never gave it much thought.

With your internet access ... I'd take the router road. If I were in your shoes that is.
My shoes .. we won't go there. They're outside airing out.

Dang....I found a good UK site while ago, just before something froze up the machine and forced a "switch off the power strip" restart.

Just read the 'hub or router' thread - excellent! Explained the difference very well and I now understand the difference, and the advantages, of using a router over a hub.

Just a final confusion

With a router, I *don't* need to set up Internet sharing on the gateway machine as the router splits the data stream intelligently - right?

Hi dns, welcome to TS.

I'm going to be setting up a similar sharing use soon as well and I believe you are correct in your assumption. If not someone will say so in a while. I think most of the TS crowd is watching the series' (baseball) games on the telly and will show up later...then again, you're probably asleep now anyway.

If nothing else, this will bump to the top.
