Author Topic: Partitioning for OSX and OS9.2.2 (Read 2634 times)

I have 2 HDDs in my Quicksilver 933.

The original 60gig IBM is not partitioned and has OSX.2.6 and Classic on it.

I also installed a 40gig Maxtor in the Quicksilver and partitoned it with 5 partitions and put OS9.2.2 on it.

I don't use 9.2.2 anymore on the Quicksilver, except to run Norton's Speed Disk from it on the OSX drive, and i don't do that very often, but i would like to have the option of running it.

So.....I'm thinking of wiping the Maxtor clean and repartitioning it and putting OSX.2.6 or maybe Panther on it but would like to have a small (maybe 2gig) partition with OS9.2.2 with Norton's on it.

My question is, where would I locate the 9.2.2 partition? On the first small partition or at the ottom of the drive?

Or maybe there is an alternative to Norton's speed disk so i wouldn't have to fool around with OS 9.2.2 on this computer at all!

My G3 runs 9.1 very well.

I say keep OS 9.x and Nortons for now.

You want your main OS on the first partition. It's the fastest.

If you only use OS 9.x once in a while, put it anywhere.

I agree with Kelly. Hang on to OS 9 and put that partition anywhere Gary.
My spare Jag is first in line on the second drive.
You have a dual bootable machine. Might as well utilize it.

When I partitioned the 2nd Drive (Maxtor) I made the partition too small for OSX. I have a barebones backup on that partition but I'd like to be able to use Carbon Copy Cloner and clone what I have on the IBM.....it keeps growing by leaps and bounds....mostly my kid making movies and downloading music!

Using Norton's on OS X drive?

I wouldn't do that if Symantec gave me the program for free along with a new G5.

Why not use speed disk on an X partition or drive bobw?

Did it once, Had to wipe the drive and reinstall everything. Numerous reports of problems like this with Nortons on most all Mac forums.

I wouldn't dare use NDD or any of the other Norton Utilities but I've used Speed Disk 3 times and it works fine with the OSX profile.

Yep, I agree with Gary; I've used Speed Disk a couple of times on Jag, and experienced nary a problem. And I'm still using SystemWorks 1!

I installed Norton's on 10.2 and used most apps on it, and had to wipe my drive. With DiskWarrior, Disk Utility and TechTool Pro available, no nmeed to chance Norton's again. I always used it on OS 9, but never again in OS X.
