Ever since 10.2.8 upgrade...Finder not running
« on: October 16, 2003, 07:56:00 AM »
Ever since 10.2.8 upgrade my Finder isn't running at bootup. You know, the little triangle in the Dock isn't under the Finder when i'm in the Finder.

Is this normal? i've never noticed it before. Maybe someone running 10.2.x can see if the triangle is under the Finder icon in their dock. Inquiring minds need to know this stuff wink.gif

Gary, I haven't a clue why that is happening, but if you do a force quit/Relaunch of the Finder, does the triangle reappear? Thinking.gif

Also, when you installed 10.2.8, was it via the combo updater?

I would say trash the Dock Preferences, an quit the dock (should automatically restart itself). If the finder really wasn't launching, I don't think you would be typing messages to us. Therefore, I think it's a problem with the Dock.

I did use the combo updater.

When the triangle beneath the Finder icon in the dock is gone and I
single click on the Finder icon It says "Finder isn't running".

The symptoms went away after a force quit. It seems to be happening randomly.

If it continues I'll trash the prefs for the Dock like you suggested Mike.

Creating a new user will let you know if the Finder is corrupt.

If the new user works, you can trash the Finder preferences for your "original" user. Yes, you will lose all your custom settings.

Where are the Finder prefs? I checked the Computer->Macintosh Hardrive->Library->Preferences.  huh.gif

That was my first thought. Unless you're posting on another 'puter.

Gary,

I wasn't very clear when I posted my last message.

When you create a new user and then restart with that user you are finding out whether or not the Finder is working correctly.

If that is the case, then you locate and trash the Finder preferences of the "original" user which are messed up.

The easiest way to locate preferences is to use the keyboard shortcut - Command +F. Type finder (not case sensitive). You will be presented with a list containing the word finder. The one you are looking for is (as you know) com.apple.finder.plist.

Trash the preferences of the original user at this point because it's not being used. When you log out and restart in your original user, the prefs are re-written.

Adding to what Bruce posted on command+F Gary S, don't do this with your present browser open but in the finder.
I've made that mistake a few times. Example with thread open I hit cmd+f and typed finder. Kept highlighting every word 'finder' in this thread. biggrin.gif

Which brings up a thought.
If you're in the finder using command + F and the command works?
