Lock on iBook, how to remove ?
« on: October 23, 2003, 10:08:26 AM »
Hi,

a friend is thinking of getting an iBook 800 with combo drive, floor model (too bad I just sold mine  )

Anyhow, the problem is that the store lost the key for the lock that was locking it to the display case. They are offering a cheaper rate, as they cut the cord, but the small lock is still attached to it. They tried to saw it off, no success...

Anyone knows whathe can do ? Sugestion ? Price ? How much would you discount for it ?

Thanks

JF

What is it, a cable and a little padlock? Take it to a hardware store and use a little bolt cutter. Then buy something at the hardware store, since they let you use the bolt cutter.

Most of those locks are made by Kensington. If it is, you might give them (or whomever) a call and ask for suggestions (or beg for help).  rolleyes.gif

Didn't know that. No that would not be good. If that's the case, I'd advise against the store trying to saw it off as well.

The motherboard is all the way up in the corner of the iBook?  That doesn't sound right to me...maybe someone who has seen the inside of an iBook can confirm this claim.

I agree that contacting Kensington or perhaps a locksmith is the best course of action.  This problem must have happened to others, so there is likely a fix.

If there was a "fix", the loc jwould not be too secure for end users wink.gif

I have one of these locks on my iBook, only mine is a combination. It plugs into the standard lock slot that all laptops and some desktops come with these days. This slot is a part of the case, and is supposed to be impossible to remove without breaking the machine or using the key.

I doubt kensington would help, because they would think it is a stolen compute, no matter how honest you are.

Your only option will be to get a locksmith willing to open the lock for you.

Well, the computer store could call, and the invoice would have the info with serial number.  It is a University computer store too !

I doubt that it would be a problem with Kensington if you had the invoice, serial number and maybe even a cover letter from the store explaining the situation.  I would call Kensington customer service and tell them the story.  I have always found Kensington to be first-rate when it comes to phone support and general customer service.

But I would also call a locksmith first because it may turn out to be less hassle (no shipping involved) and maybe even cheaper.

Like I said before, this has had to happen to someone else and I find it hard to believe that the only option is to leave the lock attached to the side of the iBook or some drastic aumptation of said lock...
