Not to distract the focus on Panther ..
« on: October 24, 2003, 10:14:33 PM »
but I've been running around a little where folks 'now' have had their dual G5s for a bit and it doesn't seem (or appear) that there's much talk like nifty, keen-o-jet, far out, my bitchin speedy blah blah etc etc.

Kind of wondering about two possible roads here.

1) *They* really didn't live up to there expectations without 'panther' and its added -kick start-.
So they're all installing panther hoping.

OR

2) They all are watching the new "hulk" movie, how the east was won, getting ready to jump over the Niagara Falls buck naked [btw. That last guy that just did the jump, had to of been fake .. somehow], or just plain forgot how to type keeping us {more precise - me} in the dark on what's the skinny.

Even though I've played with all the G5 flavors in retail stores and one dual that was maxed out with 8 gigs of ram, I've yet to see how they really cook for hours personally.
So I more or less have to rely on honest, trustworthy, helpful, -however the rest of that boyscout jive goes-.

My short (controlled) experience with the G5s gives me the impression they're not all that they are cracked up to be.
OH. Sure. Much faster with basics that one is allowed in a retail stores.
Even the dual with 8 big boys of ram, I really couldn't play around with much because *they* were doing a massive multi-able on-going daily test of the ram. Besides, it was hooked to a 15" low resolution monitor.

Is this 'non' talk about the G5s confirming my over-the-hill imagination?

After all ... while I was typing this, I kept having this picture in my head of CyberPet, Dreambird, Audrey (and few other Canadian linked gals) doing a swan dive over the Niagara Falls buck naked with KPS instructing them on the how-and-don'ts. smile.gif smile.gif

Funny I've been thinking the same thing! biggrin.gif

I don't have a lot of G5 envy yet....I guess the G4 is just doing it's thang.

Interesting Gary S.

As soon as I hit the summit, the local police helicopter start circling around my street shinning that gazillion watt spot light down at the homes.

First thought: OK. I should of expressed myself in a manor like normal folks do on a tech help board.
.... shall we go into normal ...
Nah! I wouldn't know where to start.

Second thought: I confess! I DIDN'T pay that parking ticket some thirty years ago.
I was trying to get that good looking blond meter cop to .... me. All she did was plant that blasted ticket on my wheels.
BTW SB, it was a Honda 250cc geared for dirt only bored out out too a 350. What plates? What muffler.

Then the local airforces finest pin pointed their super-duper flashlight one street back ... cop cars every which way.

Have no idea what was going on but stashed my illegal box of 'tide' I bought from a swapmeet ... just in case. Mexican 'tide' cleans cloths soooooo much better than these striking supermarket yoyos who want more than they are ~~~ not even close ~~~ too what they're asking.

 Now about the G5 bit?

Hi Highmac.  I'm on "what ever you do, enjoy it mode". smile.gif

OK. back on track with the topic.

Now! WHY?

Why shell out XXX amount of $$$ if the G5 dual isn't "what it is cracked up to be"?

My 933s kick butt (don't even comment on your dual QS bil207 <GR>).

I've now had first hand experience with my brothers 1.25 single MDD with 768 ram.
Psssst .... my 'puters still kick its butt. Well sort of.

Granted I'm starting too fade out of 9 all together.
Yet will TTP really, really keep up with Apple?
Seems DW will.
Norton is fast in my book becoming history.

It seems one has to more or less rely on his or her self taught knowledge (with the help of TS and northerners like KPS of course <gr>) which honestly isn't top on on my ~ too know~ list.

Again. Why?

Gary S lately has been expressing "speed" one way or another.
I'm just as guilty!

WHY!?!

Keep up with the Hatfields & MaCoys garbage?

Prime example is Kelly himself.
Oh sure he now has a new box (((BUT))) even if he was screaming from ... whatever ... he always, always knows ((WHERE)) to point some one for help!
Does Kelly want to play with stuff like PS etc. Seriously doubt it.
His expertise is without a doubt in my mind too point an individual towards their solutions.

Similar example.

I actually lost track of what Rob W is blabbering with these days on the internet but I suspect it's the iMac/450. When he writes, I read. Unless he's bad mouthing me.
No wonder I lost track. <gr>

Think it boils down to not only your ego but what you as an individual do with your 'puter.

Why am I typing all this dribble for?

Why Not! You tell me why not.

LOL!!!Bill, keep me out of your fantasies....the horror, the horror  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

I'm waiting for Jan 2004 Macworld to replace my trusty old G4 350 with a dual G5...I'll let you know then. wink.gif

No Panther yet either, still debating the $200 CDN cost, but I know myself all too well....I'll probably get it anyway and it'll be much sooner than later.

Bill,
The Quicksilver 933 is a much sought after machine for some reason. There aren't many of them out there floating around.

I'll really know it's a ploy when Apple recommends users to hook up 2 G5's in tandem if they want real speed! wink.gif

Ya know--I've learned the hard way to try to read any threads that have Bill's name somewhere in there.

Bill, for a left coaster who's taken a fair share of hard knocks upside your head over the years (most of the time it must have been deserved wink.gif), your memory about my iMac is excellent!  tongue.gif  biggrin.gif  Yep, still using the iMac DV+/450. I am curious to hear more about Panther with the G3s.  I guess I'll hold off putting Panther into my Performa 6115. rolleyes.gif

Sadly, no new Macs in the near future for me, but you just reminded me I need to start a thread about some other things I'm considering in the next month or so.

G5, I want one,, out of price rage though.  I have played around with the G5 in the stores and yes they are faster than my G4, but I really don't need a G5 for what my G4 already does.

Bill, you bring up an interesting point in this thread.   tongue.gif

Previously played with a G5 with Jaguar installed and it is smooth.... It was only the 1.8 GHz one too.  Last night I was in CompUSA and the Mac tech there was installing Panther on the MDD's and the G5's.  So I jumped on the same G5 from the last visit.  Panther is a bit faster then Jaguar, imo and has some cool feature and changes.

The G5 bolsters one large upgrade that all the previous Macs don't have (other than the G5 processor).  It is it's blistering frontside bus speed.  Huge leap for Apple on this model.

Do I need Panther?  No.  Do I want it?  Oh yeah.  Do I need a G5?  No.  Do I want one, OH YEAH!

But, I've never had the latest Mac.  Even when I met some of you folks from that other place, I was using a 64k Mac while everyone was raving about there PPC Mac this and beige G3 that.

Even last year when I built my Blue and White 350 MHz G3 to a 600 MHz G4, I could never afford to buy the latest Mac.  That's why I built the G3 up over time.

Recently, the B&W doesn't do everything that I need. sad.gif  But budget won't allow a G5 (wish it did), with the drop in prices and an education discount I opted for a MDD 1.25 GHz G4 and so far it has served every purpose that I need at this time.  It even has a seperate partition just waiting to try out panther on.  I wonder what I will say a year or so from now. doh.gif

I will agree with you Bill, it's about what you are doing with your Mac/s.  But also disagree with you, cause for only some is it affected by ego.  Most are affected by their use or budget.

Talk about taking a -wild memory guess- Rob W on what box you're typing away on. smile.gif
I've been hashing around a few thoughts myself on picking up a new toy or two [other than a 'puter) in the next month or two also.
Just picked up my snail mail. Registrations and smog are due on two wheels.
Our now ousted state governor jacked up the registrations by a bunch before getting the boot and it doesn't appear Conan the Barbarian will be able to retract that.
So guess my toys might be put on hold for a bit.
... was so looking forward to a new plastic pool .... Have ta share the dogs for a little longer. <gr>

I did the same today AL.
Was up in the San Bernardino County where there's a Comp-usa.
They had a 'stock' G5 dual with Panther on it.
Monster fires going on there, so I had to make my stop quick and split. Way too much smoke. Not to mention getting in the way of the fireguys.
In an odd way, I was fortunate because no one in their right mind would be store-hopping in the mist of two massive fires. So I had the dual all to myself (actually almost the whole store to myself) before the smoke got way too close and we had to get the h*ll out of there.
Anyways. Panther seemed OK ... I guess.?.
One guy came in *extremely in a hurry due to the fire*just to buy the OS and get out.
Typical comp employees didn't have a clue where the key was to the new Panther OS on opening day. Mentioned to this guy about the dual having panther installed.
Kind of cheered him up some while he was playing around on it. He was not a happy camper waiting on the comp folks for the keys!
Talk about a dedicated Mac person ... that he was! smile.gif

Just got back from the local Apple retailer.  I don't know about the speed thing, but the G5 box and 12" PB case looked and felt right nice to me.  It was the first time I had run my hand over the aluminum exterior of either Mac and it sure beats the heck out of plastic, IMVHO.

Would LOVE to have a G5 but I think that I am a dedicated portable Mac user these days, so it looks like the PB for me.  I already have someone interested in my iBook so I am waiting for PBs to arrive with Panther installed, maybe a week or two...

Just a guess Bill. smile.gif

The GUI and all the little things you do is just a bit faster on G5s.

It's not like things are going to be done before you start.

Big video projects and such will be done in 30 minutes instead of 70.

That's where it shows up.

And things aren't optimized for 64 Bit yet. There's still that for the G5s.

I don't have G5 envy yet myself. smile.gif

AL, I was up in that area for an appointment (work related) meeting.
Once it dawned on the others what they were getting into, it was canceled at the last hour.
Its about an hours drive for myself so I stuck around checking a few things out before getting out of there.

On the fire or fires.

While I was at that comp-usa another fire started up some five miles were I was and spread rapidly till it joined with the larger one.

All morning I've been watching and listening on the TV about this fire.
Last I heard somewhere around 40,000 people have been evacuated.
Conflicting reports on the amount of structures burnt down but I think it would be safe to say at least 300 plus. Most likely many were homes.

IF it gets up the mountain unchecked .......
Most of the trees up there are bone dry.
Bigbear, Arrowhead will be in a world of hurt.

Kelly.
One of the main reasons why I picked up another 933 was for holding out till the 3gigs come out and tested.
Lately I've been getting antsy.
Now I'm sort of in limbo. <gr>
