Panther Gotchas
« on: October 25, 2003, 09:46:42 PM »
While not show stoppers, they do, IMNHO, still qualify as Gotchas that warrant publication. Apparently others, in addition to yers truly, have also encountered the following:

1. From a cold start, a Verify of my permissions looks like:
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/certs, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/classes.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/ppd, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/printers.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/var/spool/cups/tmp, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/var/spool/cups, should be 26, group is 0

And I can print normally on my Epson 740. Cool. clap.gif

But, If I Repair Permissions (all the above get reset from 0 to 26, what ever that means) and then I can no longer print. There is nothing in the print cue, no error dialog, nothing. Not so cool! wallbash.gif

Then, if I shut down the computer and the printer, and then restart them both, the Permissions return (to 0) as initially noted, and printing is again routine.

I have zapped the PRAM and run DW and fsck -f with no success. Needless to say I remain confused. For sure that is the first time I have heard of Repairing Permissions actually doing harm. Thinking.gif

I have repeated this three times and each time the results were as noted.

2. Problem 2 is really minor. Magic Menu (Stuffit 7) will no longer display in the Menu Bar.

Since both of these conditions have/are being experienced by others, I expect a fix will soon be forthcoming (or so I hope). But if you know of a fix, please holler up.

One chap at MFI fixed Gotcha #1 this way:

"Archive and Install did the trick! This time when the customize button came available I selected not to install any extra languages, fonts, or print drivers I didn't need including Gimp Print. Only the Epson 1 and Epson 2 packages. Then in the new printer setup utility, I configured my printers. Disk Utility repaired one cups file and that was it. Several prints and permission repairs later all is still well. Man it sure is nice having reverse order printing back for the old 740 workhorse."

Since I did the Upgrade Install, I may well (have to) go the Archive & Install route unless some other fix develops.

This is probably not really a sollution but... maybe Stuffit 8 is build to work with Panther?
I like Stuffit 8's icons biggrin.gif

Thanks MB, but as Stuffit 8 has received so much criticism of late, I chose not to get it, ergo that is one arrow I avoided.

Problem #1 (the Permissions breaking the printing) is apparently resolved by doing an Archive & Install, but then the folks who do that are having other problems. So for the next few weeks or until this all gets sorted out, I will just shut down & restart my computer every two weeks or so. While this is hardly a problem, it is a condition that should not be necessary-even for Pioneers! wink.gif

Just to close the loop on this issue, I went ahead and did the Archive & Install. No more Permissions problems. Because I did a Custom Install as well (I elected not to install foreign fonts, language converters, and the non applicable print drivers) the actual install time was about 30 minutes compared with about an hour for the original Upgrade Install.

The only thing I had to do was transfer the /libraryCFMSupport from the old system to the new, so that my Handspring would sync (it does). Even so, I'll keep my Previous System for a few weeks--just in case...

As you might expect, I spent more time trying to avoid this effort than if I had just gone ahead and done it. Maybe if I search hard enough I can find where Bernie told me to do it that way. Devilish2.gif

For sure I learned a bit (a very small bit) in the process. rolleyes.gif

DW reports no problems and all is again right with the world. clap.gif

Now that I have reinstalled Panther, a third party fix to the Printing/Permissions issue has been posted: http://www.allosx.com/1067395661/index_htm...5661/index_html tongue.gif
