Panther.....DiskWarrior 3?

Is Panther compatable with DiskWarrior 3. I'm assuming it isn't but I don't like to assume. smile.gif

The Alsoft site doesn't mention a word about Panther. huh.gif

DW  3 can be used to check and repair a disk that has Panther installed - if run from the CD or from another disk that is booted under 10.2.x.
If DW 3 is run from Panther on a non startup disk it hangs on Step 8.  sad.gif

My findings are identical to those of Bill.

I have not had access to my Panther today, but I heard that the reason DW hangs in Step 8 relates to fact that Panther turns on the journaling feature for volumes. As such, you must turn it off using Disk Utility or Terminal before optimizing a volume or rebuilding its disk directory with DW or Drive 10.

To disable journaling, open Disk Utility, highlight the volume, go to File in the Menu bar and select "Disable Journaling".

That's the theory anyway, but I won't be able to test it until tomorrow.

"Disable Journaling"

Thanks for adding that bit of information, Harv!

I disabled Journaling almost immediately after installing Panther. So, by the time I ran DW3, it didn't occur to me that it might be a problem.

Journaling is off on my machine, but DW still hangs on stage 8 When running against another HD from Panther. Running from slave drive (10.2.8) it cleaned up the main drive (10.3) without problems.
Starting from DW CD and trying to clean up Panther locked up the machine. I will have to investigate that further.
Incidently I have DW installed on both HD's

From Panther I restarted with DW CD and all was normal this time. I am not sure what happened prev. Bill is 100% on the hang at stage 8 when running from a panther HD install to another disc. Perhaps Alsoft will supply a patch.

I tried that tip I heard about and mentioned above (disabling Journaling). No luck, at least on my DP 800. DW still hangs in step 8, with a notice to try running DW from the CD (or something like that).

I just found this on Alsoft's site: http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html#jaguar

"DiskWarrior 3.0 will not run while started up under Mac OS X v. 10.3 (Panther). DiskWarrior 3.0 can be used to safely rebuild the directory of a disk (including a disk with file journaling and/or FileVault enabled) with Mac OS X v. 10.3 by starting up from your current DiskWarrior 3.0 CD. An update allowing DiskWarrior to run while started from Mac OS X v. 10.3 is forthcoming; we currently estimate that the update will be available in mid-November. This update will be able to start up all machines available at the time of its release, including PowerMac G5 machines, PowerBook models updated September 2003, eMac models updated October 2003, and the iBook G4."

I wonder if there will be a charge for the DW update on cd.

I am somewhat disapointed with DW 3 in that when I run DW 3 from the cd and restart after making repairs it hangs,
forcing me to do a hard restart which then causes directory damage that needs repairing.
Alsofts response was that this is a problem with some dual processor Macs and blamed the cause on the "System" folder that Apple provided Alsoft with.
