Which router?
« on: October 27, 2003, 08:55:24 PM »
I have ordered a new G4 iBook  and  would like to network it with my iMac.  I spoke to the apple genius at the apple store and he suggested that after installing an airport extreme card in the iBook and a regular airport card in the iMac, I connect it to an 802.11b router which is a lot cheaper than  the airport.  He mentioned a Netgear or a Linksys router.  However, the stores (Comp USA, Best Buy etc.) seem to have big rebates on other brands.  Are Netgear and Linksys the only routers compatible with macs?  I'd appreciate your experiences with routers.
Thank you.

Short answer.... no.  Almost any router is cross platform.  Some brands may not directly support macs, but they should work fine.  I am surprised that you are finding other brands at Betst Buy though.  It used  to be that Linksys was about the only brand you could find at Best Buy.

Thank you Steve.  I don't really know which brand is featured in the Best Buy brochure.  The best deal seems to be a D-Link at Comp USA which only $30 after discount and rebate (list price $80.00).  I actually called the D-Link tech number but the tech guy wasn't clear about it.  I'm not sure he ever heard of macintosh.

D-Link makes good products.  I'm sure it will work fine for your needs. You may not find any Mac specific instuctions in the documentation (then again you might) but if you have a basic understanding of how to network your Mac, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm sure you can get whatever help you mey need here, when you go to install it.

I have a D-Link router (DI-614+) hooked to my Beige G3 and it works great. D-Link is a good brand. I also have a D-Link 650+ AirPlus PCMCIA card in my PC laptop...which hooks it to my local network. It also works great. You could use it in your iBook. It's cheaper than an Airport card. Good luck!!! smile.gif

Margie:

For my adventures in router land, read this thread.

Here's another good thread with some good links from Paddy on set up.

And read my last entry about how to solve a ALL TOO COMMON problem.

Margie, I'm cruising on my trusty D-Link as I type this - very good, trouble-free router. Great price too (even better than the one I got  tongue.gif ) so go for it!

Bonus - it has better range than the Airport base station I have (the Snow version) too.

Thanks so much to all of you for this valuable information  I will probably buy the D-Link router while it is on sale.  Of course, then I'll have to wait for the iBook delivery, as it has been back ordered by Club Mac.  I'm really looking forward to the new computer since my current laptop is an original blueberry iBook with a 3.4 G hard drive and OS9.2 on it.Thank you again.  I'll keep you posted on my adventures in routerland.  You're all so great!!

Slightly OT, but do the new iBooks and Powerbooks require the new Airport Extreme cards, or can an old Airport card be used in them?

I was going to start a new thread, so hopefully I will get my answer here...

99.99% sure they take the extreme Mayo.

Not sure about all models of D-links but from my personal experience they do have a better [line of site] distance range than Apples base.
I've a apple base extreme. It's good for around 95 to 110 feet.
My neighbor down the road a ways has a D-link 624. They get around 110 to 130 feet.

My airport cards are the standard not the extremes, while my base is the extreme.
Might be why.?.
Heard you can get an external antennae that boost the apple extreme a bunch BUT more bucks.

I'm happy with my extreme base because it does what I want it to do.
I can go anywhere in my home or outside on my property with zero problems.
Its walking over to a neighbors that I start to lose the signal.

The new G4 iBooks take an airport extreme card only.  It will be linked to the G4 iMac with a regular airport card since the iMac can't take the airport extreme card.  Since I will have only one airport extreme card, I will lose the advantage of airport extreme.

The D-Link router set up without incident and it even came with directions for the mac. We now have the flat screen iMac and the iBook connected to the web and to each other.  By the way, the only difficulty encountered was inserting the airport extreme card in the iBook.  My husband and I both worked on it without success.  We called Apple and even emailed the tech guy digital pictures of our insertion (via the other computer, of course) without getting any help, although he tried hard.  Then DanF showed up at our door and inserted it for us in about 20 seconds.  We were just afraid of breaking something and weren't pushing hard enough.

Thank you to all who posted replies on the router question.  By the way, the iBook is great!!   I haven't explored panther yet but will do so soon.

One more thing.  The apple genius had told us that we had to install a regular airport card in the iMac and an airport extreme card in the iBook.  On Dan's adviced we installed only the airport extreme card and
plugged the cable modem directly into the router and saved the price of an airport card for the iMac.
