Gee, do you think that maybe that ol' Luddite Mayo has finally upgraded to OS X? I warned you all that I might have a few questions!

I currently have DiskWarrior, TechToolPro and Norton. I would prefer to use only one, and from what I have read Norton doesn't seem like a viable choice. Will TTP do the job or do I need to upgrade DW as well?

Does OS X tend to need fixing like the earlier OS?

I am getting most of my info from Pogue's OS X (10.1) Missing Manual, since the Panther version will not be out until December. Has "Sad Macs..." been updated for OS X and, if so, will I need it as much as I have needed it for OS 7-9?

My 2¢:

DW 3.0 works great with Panther, though you may need to run it from the CD (unless it is installed on separate volumes) and in that case, it will be especialy slow, but it will work; and is worth the wait. I would not be without it.

Many help sites are replete with horror stories re Norton Utilities, but still, some seem to use it with success. That said, "Symantec Macintosh software is not yet fully compatible with Apple's new operating system Mac OS X 10.3 (code named Panther), released October 24, 2003. Symantec is currently working on updates for compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3."

As for me, I avoid it.

TTPro v4.0 is now scheduled for release sometime in November. So on that, it's just wait and see.

Disk Warrior 3.0 (with OS X 10.3.1) is peerless.

I tried running an installed DiskWarrior 3 between volumes on different hard drives both running Panther. DW got to stage 8 and hung for a long time, but it finally finished. The final report said that it failed to rebuild the directory.

DiskWarrior works great when I run it from the CD.

Don't need any of them.

With Journaling enabled and a tool such as Maintain, or Cocktail. You really don't need anything else.

Scott, I agree that 99.9% of the time, nobody needs the help of DiskWarrior or any other utility. OS X takes good care of itself.

But, I keep DiskWarrior around for insurance. Ya jus' never know...

Yup, that's a good maintenance summary by Bob LeVitus Scott linked to there.
For me, DiskWarrior.
I've also found with Panther that you have to run it from the CD, otherwise it hangs.
Wretched Drive 10 hosed 16 gigs of my stuff a while back when I was still with Jaguar (which wasn't the end of the world, since though I simply couldn't recover it I was able to replace most of it).
Since the French outlet for Micromat tells me they'll swap my Drive 10 for the very long-awaited TechTool Pro 4 for free, I won't look that gift horse too closely in the mouth.
But after what Drive 10 did, I'll be very wary of Micromat and OS X.

On an unrelated note, but a third party "utility" of sorts, has anybody tried ShapeShifter, just out from the Unsanity people?
Since you have a 15-day trial period with this OS X theme installer -- the "yes, it's safe" queries are already covered inside-out and upside-down at other Mac forums, but it's still best to check out the sites of those of who put themes on offer -- I started playing with it last night, rather than do things the old hard way, and it seems pretty cool.

I personally like to run permissions at least once a week and I run it after I install anything.

MacJanitor is good too.

I also like to have DW 3 one hand just in case.

If you have DW 3 installed on a 10.2.x partition, you can run it from there without getting the hangup. It fixed a problem in one of my Panther partitions when I ran it from 10.2.8.
