possibly on my end?

System preference > startup Disk.
When I decide to zip off to another partition/drive from Panther the startup disk sometimes does not recognize a partition that has an active system on it and quits.
At first I thought I had it pin-pointed down too my apps partition but now I'm not sure.
I also thought 'networks' had something to do with it. Still not sure.

I've ran all the utility test including permissions and disk repair.

Doesn't happen every time but ...

I think this all started when I used CCC to copy my 10.2.8. over to an empty partition on another drive and then installed Panther on top of the original 10.2.8.

Re rebooting to a different drive/volume. FWIW, I have not (yet) encountered that particular problem, but if I did, I would give DiskWarrior a go. Shouldn't hurt. Or, is that one of the Utilities you already tried?

Re Networks. When I visited my local Apple VAR last Thursday, he mentioned that they have noticed some wonky behavior there. No show stoppers, more like inconsistent/misleading data presentations, especially when the network is via WiFi, e.g., the network is active, works as designed, and the proper icons are on the desktop, but a check of Network does not always indicate that.

Don't remember and am curious, what technique did you use in installing Panthwire? I’m wondering if this is another one of those gotchas created when one uses the Upgrade install.

Think I've narrowed it down to 'network' again.
If I click on network and bring up internal, then go to startup, startup disk kicks in.
Now the question is why?

On my home front (thinking along the lines something is wrong here) I saw [again] that it was my 'apps' partition that wasn't getting/being recognized when startup would quit.
So once I booted into there, saw that I had norton running and TTP protection.
Turned them off.

Ran around in the startups from the other partitions/drives. No problems.
Checked with my utilities. This 'puter is so clean ... it's shouting at me (((wash your hands first before touching my person bud))).

Get back to Panther.
Same-0-same-0 .. every now and then, unless I change 'networks' first.
Even then it still is a hit and miss.

When you used CCC to "copy" over 10.2.8, did you check the dialog box checkmark that makes CCC copy over "boot" information?

Can't recall Kps.?.

"copy over" "boot" has me going though.
I cleared (erased) that partition and then copied 10.2.8. over to that empty partition.

...don't know Bill. What I do know is that there's a check box that makes your CCC backup bootable or not.

I just checked CCCs pref. By default the bootable box is checked.
So it should be safe to say it was checked.

Yep. It shows up.
The OS update didn't fix it either. Didn't think it would.
