It's 1.3MB in size....not sure what it fixes as my software update window was blank! But friend said it fixes the firewire problem, something to do with WebDAV and other things.

From VersionTracker:

"What's new in this version:
The 10.3.1 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, services and technologies: FileVault, Printing, WebDav, and FireWire 800 drives. This update also includes the latest Security Updates. Important Note: Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple recommends you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive manufacturer for more information."

I DL'd and installed 10.3.1 without issue. As expected, a restart is required. Now, what affect (for good or ill) it has on my system (DP 800 G4) is still TBD.

It's nice that Apple continues to keep the updates rolling out. But I'm a little disappointed that the Safari bugs haven't been addressed.

Rather disappointing that every time Apple comes out with an update, I lose some third party software. So far, since panther a couple of hundred dollars in apps have bit the dust. mad.gif

What now?

That's why I never buy 3rd party software that affects the OS...most aren't worth it and if Apple incorporates it into the OS, it's usually better in most cases.

John,

Safari 1.1 code doesn't allow for minimum font size. Without that, some web pages are extremely hard to read on a 23" Cinema Display. Third party utilities like Safari Enhancer used to work to limit how small a font would display in Safari 1.0.

The other thing I call a bug is how Safari 1.1 cannot open a link to a page with a Flash file such as, Senses Challenge.

The only way to view that file in Safari 1.1 is to drag the URL link to the desktop and then drag it back to the Safari window. Again... this worked just fine in Safari 1.0.

Tinkertool 3.0.1 seems to work for the Safari issue here Bruce.

And as for 3rd party stuff... I'm just biting my lip waiting for FruitMenu to be updated. That's the only thing I really miss from 10.2.8.

John,

Yes, I have reported both to Apple. Only the font size issue has been taken seriously as far as I know.

I received an email reply today from David Hyatt, one of the Safari developers.

He said:
QUOTE
The very next Safari release on Panther will return the minimum font size behavior to the same behavior as Safari 1.0.  I can't comment on when that release will be though.

dave

Scott,

I tried TinkerTool. It doesn't work.

The problem is best explained by David Hyatt:
QUOTE
The problem with minimum font size is that there is really a need for two features:

(1) An implicit minimum size that can be applied automatically by the Web browser in situations where layout won't be disrupted.

(2) Support for a true minimum font size that is applied by the user to all fonts as an override, and that will disrupt page layout potentially (but the tradeoff is obviously worth it for users with vision problems).

Jaguar supported (2) but not (1). I then changed the meaning of minimum font size in Panther to mean (1) and not (2). It seems obvious now that both features are valuable, and that at the very least support for a separate minimum font size preference is worthwhile.

I'll look into fixing this.

Let's hope the fix will be released soon.

Scott,

I just looked and found this comment on VersionTracker, regarding FruitMenu working in Panther.

Bruce on the flash issue, you can drag the URL to your desktop and then just double click it so it becomes a Safari page.
At least that works for me anyways.
---
Seems to me the size (1.3) of the update is a little on the small to actually do much.?.
I couldn't tell any difference.

That hasn't worked for me, Bill. I have to drag the URL file to the open window.

Actually Bruce.... I'm running the latest APE.. and non-panther supported unsanity haxies are just that... unsupported and problematic not at the basic finder level but when one has several application open and all working... well the haxies can cause application crashing in panther. The Few that unsanity has verified support in Panther (Clerdock, Windowshade, MenuExtra Enabler, Mighty Mouse) all do work perfectly at all times. But installign a single unsupported ape will wreak havok. And the only real correction is to clean install the OS to get rid of all ape bits, pieces and remnants. I'm waiting for unsanity to say it's okay.
