I only have a 60 day run of .Mac and I assume my iChat account with that address will go up in smoke when that time comes. Don't think I want to pay $100 just for using chat. Not impressed with AOL stuff, but it sounds like AIM is somewhat mature, and I assume free (my favorite price!).

On a second tack, if you have an iChat/AIM name/address why not post it in the Profile here? Is that a security problem? Or simply a desire to keep things a little more private? Dick is the only name/address I have right now and he scares my cat sometimes! jawdrop.gif  harhar.gif  Devilish2.gif  toothgrin.gif

When you're 60 days is up, there goes the smoke smile.gif
I use mac.com for albums, storage, uploading files for people, etc.
AIM has always worked well for an instant messenger, and it's free. Just a smalll program, but no video conferencing on the Mac version.
Not a security problem.

To: Jim's Cat

Are you a Traditionalist Tabby? Would you prefer faxes?

For the Record (for everybody suffering Fax STF angst): I downloaded today a very neat little ($10) program called Fax Center. In its ease of use it puts one in mind of the oft-and-long-lamented Global Village Fax Center.

Since this is a Pantherized iMac, literally all I did was plug in the old modem line cord and the program did the rest.

Remember those Days of Yesteryear, folks, when initialization strings and modem scripts could/would drive you up the wall (or, alternatively) out the door?

Fergit it. This IS Panther! and Fax Center

Your trial .mac account will expire in 60 days.  You will then have to rely upon AIM for instant messneging.  However, if you use your AIM account with iChat AV (free of charge) you can take advantage of the video conferencing feature.  Register a free AIM account at http://my.screenname.aol.com/_cqr/login/lo...ized&createSn=1 (that should work, if not, try http://www.aim.com/index.adp) choose not to download it.  Open iChat AV and open preferences.  Go to the "Accounts" tab.  Select "use AIM account".  Use the account name and password that you registered at the AIM site.

I hope this is of help, I have been using iChat with an AIM account since Jaguar came out.  my account name is joe9173 (not a .mac account).

If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a complete dumbox when it comes to this chat thing. I assumed that one needed both a chat name and the associated e-mail address for that name. I just don't understand how only one would suffice.

Just for grins, I added both Joe and Bob as new buddies. Joe's account came up fine, even though he is off-line. But Bobs 'iChat name' looks more like an e-mail address and he does not appear reachable in the iChat Buddy List.

As for the need for an address, I guess since there are only two possible servers to use with AIM/iChat, and since you must select which one to associate with the name, that solves the 'connection' problems. However, if one has 'associated a name with an e-mail address that is not an AOL or a .Mac one, the thing will not/cann not work. That's what happened with Dick and me eralier last week, I think.

So, bobw, is your name really "mactek@mac.com"? Or is it actually only "mactek"?

At the risk of getting too far off-topic, I find the 20megs of storage somewhat of a joke! I pretty well reached that limit with just the images from the site I maintain for our church! And iDisk is no faster than when I tried it on 9. FTP seems much much quicker. And now that the disk is almost full, I get irritating, repeating messages to that effect during other work. True, I had 'sync' enabled, that is probably what caused the messages, but a simple "Don't remind me of what I have memorised' check box would be nice... Instead I get a chance to 'Buy more' which becomes even more tiresome... nono.gif

RHPConsult...

Many thanks for the Fax Center link!  I installed it on the iBook and iMac and so far it has worked like a charm.  I have sent and received faxes at both Macs and to my Brother fax machine. I haven't figured how well it works when it is set to receive on a non-dedicated fax line or with an answering machine, but for simple manual sending and receiving it is a time-saver and a cheap alternative to a stand-alone fax machine.

Well worth the $10 shareware fee.

doh.gif I should have checked. But CD's are still cheaper (just like me). blush-anim-cl.gif Still, I try to keep the smokers out of our house, I guess I'll have to pay up to avoid that 'smoke!' rolleyes.gif

bobw, I'm called xairbusdriver in iChat. (xairbusdriver@mopam. wink.gif mac.com, but don't let anyone know, I'm trying to stay off any more SPAM lists! toothgrin.gif )

RHPConsult finally got it through my thick skull that the AIM and .Mac databases are probably the same, some kind of sweet deal Steve made for us. So, the e-mail address is probably redundant and not even required. What was also confusing to me was that the Address Book did not show a choice for iChat/Apple but it did have one for AIM. And then in iChat, you have a choice between AIM and iChat. You need to keep this kind of change hidden from my mind (although it is very easy to actually hide my mind, being as small as it is!). The differences make more sense since I now understand the 'name' database actually has the correct e-mail address association matter taken care of.

TidBITS#717 has some excerpts by Jeff Carlson who recently authored iChat AV2: Visual QuickStart Guide. He claims it's available at Amazon for about $10.
